Has anyone read Ulysses?

So when are we having the next /LANG/ meetup?

It's probably too late to schedule one for 2026, but there's more than enough time for one in 2027.

First thing's first, where are we gonna have it?
Jordan - Jordie is the most notable poster here and Jordan is roughly in the centre of the old-world / afro-eurasian continent which is as close to being 'central' as you can get on a globe.
Serbia - Serbro is the second most notable poster here except he actual learns languages and is helpful to others. If anyone deserves to have it close to home then it is him.
USA - A lot of posters in this thread come from this country, even if I can't tell any of them apart. It also makes sense to have it in an english speaking country as it is the one language we all have in common.

If you guys have any other suggestions then feel free to share them.

Anyways... Dropped Spanish and get back to German and Italian after short holidays. I also need to master English and I want to learn one Asian language before I die, and it's not easy as an unc with an old mind, a job and other hobbies. I‘m an Ostrogoth, mind you. And I‘m not a faggot. Scotts also have twinks afaik but I imagine them differently from how I‘ve described english twinks. And it‘s time you became independent for the sole reason of having your own flag on int.

THOSE FUCKS SHOULD GIVE ME THAT FLAG ALREADY. WE ARE TECHNICALLY OUR OWN COUNTRY ALREADY.
But yeah, MI5 already rigged the independence vote on purpose so we won't be winning via democracy anytime soon.

Besides that, they are twinks in scotland however, the general population of the south are twinks or immigrants. No inbetween.

Lets not entirely derail this thread from language learning to pol. I pretty sure any warrior class is dead from how the british military numbers look.

I‘m not a fag. This thread is dead, I‘m trying to learn more about scottland.
>>
>>224189823
When I learn about cultures, I don't ask their body types and how many twinks live there.

Unfortunately, wales is the coolest one in the UK. We're like the hawaii of europe, half our culture is artifical. Kilts are traditional but like at special event like weddings and clans don't really exist and neither does our language except like 5k speakers in the highlands or islands. Closest thing to scottish media you could watch is trainspotting, still game and chewing the fat.

I hate England so I won't have anything particularly cool to say about it.
>>
How can I improve my English? A while back, I used to read and listen to a Harry Potter at the same time, and I was doing a pre-made anki deck with selected quotes from the book (I can’t find it now, it was probably taken down due to copyright issues), and it helped me a little. Should I go back to that, or are there any better methods?
>inb4 more passive input
After a certain point, it stops working or progress is too slow
Also, should I head towards British or American English? I like old British radio dramas, skits, and sitcoms, but Americans produce more new content, translate more and their version seems more international. Or should I just mix it however I like?
>>224187542

I like the way some scottish lassies look. Darkish red hair paired with the fairest skin imaginable. Only in Scottland. And asking about the twink population of a country is one of the first things you should inform yourself about if you‘re still in your early 20s. Nothing gay about it. I for one wouldn‘t like to travel to bulgaria and be surprised that all the people are ugly thus ruining my stay.

I mean there‘s nothing to see in bumgaria it‘s just the first cunt that came to mind for making my point.

literally no one supports the wars here except 70 year old retarded boomers. if you are reading someone defending any of america's military activities online and they are not 70 years old they are either a bot or a troll
>>
>>224192160
Well, obviously this is the first war that is majorly unpopular in the US since forever. Some americans I absolutely believe would defend the invasion of vietnam or the middle east before the iran war. This is the first war where the US president doesn't give a fuck.

That doesn't dismiss the culture of wanting to invade third world shitholes all the time though.

Now to skirt this towards internal culture of the us so the mods don't smack me for talking too much politics, the no public transport thing is awful and the US doesn't really produce anyrhing culturally worthwhile. Only reason why they have the biggest box offices for movies is probably due to laundering (fuck off, no one bought that many avatar tickets) or advertising so much that you had to know about.

I don't wanna say the US is rotting culturally but it's not their fault. It'a contrained by retarded rules, beaucrats and politics. Oh and their superhero movies. The boys was the ONLY good show and they fucked it up after like the first season. I thought the idea of normal people killing corrupt demi god like superheros was an amazing concept until it was obvious no one important will die and then the plot became make fun of celebrities and politicians which isn't the worse but took me out of the believability of the show. Removed the stakes of it all.

it would've taken an additional 200-300 years of isolation from other english dialects for american english to diverge far enough to be considered its own language like scots is, however with the internet and american english being dominant what's more likely to happen is there either being a koine formed between the major dialects of english or american english simply encroaches into britain replacing the local dialects, terminally online autists have already been complaining about gaining american features and losing local ones because they basically grow up on american content. with more and more people growing up on the internet what could happen is some twisted form of internet american english slowly displacing other english dialects and even other languages in non-english speaking countries (this assumes that they don't engage with local content or speak to people IRL which is only becoming more common as time goes on)
basically american english is too culturally big to fail and it is more likely for it to literally replace every other language in the west than for it to just disappear into indian english level irrelevance, though neither should happen and the status quo will persist if people just clown americanisms and code switching so we don't devolve into metro manila tagalog tier babble

>talking about movies I've never heard of
I haven't watched mainstream media in many years but some good tv shows that were domestic-oriented and not made for an international market back in the day were boston legal, criminal minds, all the star trek series, etc.
I not only have never heard half the shit foreigners talk to me about but none of my friends or family ever mention any of that stuff either. I'm literally more likely to hear people from other countries mention it than people I know in this country. I'm sure plenty of normie americans watch that shit but its literally more popular *per capita* in other countries than it is here not just in total global viewership.

It's the same with whatever youtube shit like asmongold they all statistically have higher viewership rates in ireland and australia and the UK than they do in the US

What's the best way to achieve fluent English output after 20 years of English CI? I was too anxious to ever speak with anyone online, so my output has been very limited, mostly anonymous comments like this. I tried reading a book aloud for an hour. Fuck brehs reading Latin is so intoxicating when it’s easy but literally none of it is ever easy. I was bored at work rereading some Caesar without any tools or translations and it was just nonstop ecstasy being able to fluently grasp his prose and idiom with precision. But I know the second I go to an unfamiliar work/author it’s back to the grindstone because of the corpus all being so hard. Even the linguistically simple stuff still requires you to sit down and read some 18th century mathematician or something. Someday I need to just start translating a bunch of easy stuff for people, not readers or anything, but like that one legend translating hentai into Latin. It’s just a great language but it’s locked behind the need to mostly learn by grinding (yes boring readers counts as grinding).
>>
>>224199896
I don't find grammar to be the issue with reading Latin just vocabulary
>>
>>224199896
You're not wrong, so just cheat. Take the parallel translation pill. Read English-language summaries of the work before you read it in Latin. Skip parts that are too difficult. Do what you have to do. It's every man for himself.
>>
>>224201569
I literally do this on the recommendation of the bald man. I read rapidly line by line or paragraph by paragraph comparing the two, then weeks later I’ll reread the section.

Summaries are also essential less for linguistic reasons but simply for historical reasons sometimes. Like it helps to read the endnotes for a chapter on my gesta francorum and have any specialized or ambiguous terms clarified, it’s just a shame scholars stopped writing their endnotes in latin and switched to vernacular lol.

I do find Servius’s commentaries on the Aeneid to easy enough to be useful for actually getting Vergil, but reading it is so time consuming since it’s a page long discussion of every word, compared to just blitzing through a big chunk of lines with a loeb.

i was considering korean as well but only because of recent years and their growing cultural output in terms of music, movies and tv which definitely punches above themself but thought chinese just has a much larger inventory of the stuff. more is not equal to the best, but the amount of media they have means there's a better chance of having good media in the ocean of content they swim in; this does not take into account actually accessing the chinese stuff, which is where i'd put korean over chinese in that regard

it was a mistake but hindsight is 20/20 and nationalism, the centralization of power within governments through regulation of language and the spread of english (american and british) power would've been a tough combo to overcome for any lover of latin wishing to see a world where it has flourished. if the polish lithuanian commonwealth had remained intact and didn't get deluge'd once or thrice i think we'd be seeing a unipolar world ruled by the sole superpower of poland-lithuania where the official language is latin still

I have very little internal monologue*, so basically I'm an NPC without any thought according to some people on X.
Anyway, my point is that I sometimes find myself translating French phrases into English (most constructions are very similar) but very often when I'm speaking English, I have some idea in my head but no words express it. Like I'm not proficient enough with the idioms and sentences fragments to formulate my thoughts. And there's no original Finnish sentence at the bottom I could just translate, either.

* I don't have any "I" speech going on in my head, I have imagined monologues and dialogues between people, not necessarily involving me, some keywords and phrases that pop into my mind, but nothing resembling a narration. I don't see how it is even possible to do e.g. math with only narrative thinking, you have to find the end of the paren before you can comprehend the expression, it's impossible linearly.

What graded reader do you have? I'm also learning russian and would love to know. I got a strong feeling that i'm probably going to brute translate a book or two or russian before I can start reading it without constant lookups unfortunately.
>>
>>224249359
You’ll do yourself a big favor if you brute force a book that’s like 15k words max and 2k unique lemmas max.
>>
>>224249600
Any suggestions on a book/s to brute force?
>>
>>224249632
Well I’m not learning Russian. In my personal case, I brute forced the gospel of John for Latin. It was something like 2,000 lemmas and 12k words, so what happened is that by 1/4 in I had covered most of the lemmas that occurred on any given page, and by the second half I was actually sort of just reading. In other langs it may be much harder to read. In ancient Greek John has as few as 1,100 lemmas. A key ingredient there was that it made the other 3 gospels plus acts of the apostles mostly readable, so it meant I could go immediately read another 40k words. Rereading all of that twice got me to like 100k words of real reading on its own.

A good alternative would probably be the little prince. It exists in a ton of langs, is pretty short, and is supposed to have a fairly small vocabulary, so it’s popular for language learning. Plus most of the book is conversations. My french copy is under 50 pages.

A key step is to reread the book at least once through after you’ve ground through it, but really as much rereading as you can manage.
>>
>>224249632
Oh and I used a program called LUTE to speed up the whole dictionary/lookup workflow, make sure to check that out. I didn’t keep using it after John but it was a lifesaver for breaking into my first book.
>>
>>224249902

i have an old one by bond & bobrinskoy. it appealed to me because the lesson is based on stories from russian classics, plus it was only $10 used. it assumes you know the basic words (about 100) and some grammar, and it introduces 10-15 new words in the footnotes, though it might be fewer than that as you move on. there are probably better ones, but my search was not extensive

the other guy suggested the bible, but wouldn't you rather read stories about russian niggas getting shot or dying from alcoholism? that's probably closer to modern life

>>224219135

North Korea is very interesting though, and knowing Korean makes it easier to engage with the media they produce.

Do not simply "read the Bible." It's like 73 books and 750-1 million words. Limit your horizons dramatically. Pick one book at a time and treat that as its own project. John I specifically picked because it had the smallest vocabulary of the 4 gospels. Mark has more concrete and less figurative language, and is the shortest.

Yes, the most common words are the hardest to learn, and less common words are often for specific things or topics or concepts and are thus easier to specifically remember.

Doesn't seem to contradict anything I said. Most the profiles detail extraordinary circumstances like being the child of diplomats, or learning several languages due to being exposed from birth. There's a Korean woman that was sent to Canada on her own for a year of English immersion at 10 years old (where she also encountered and began learning French), an ambassador that was exposed to 4 languages before 5 years old, the son of two diplomats (that spoke 5 and 7 languages respectively) who lived in 10 different countries. An Vietnamese immigrant that moved to Switzerland as a child and learned French, English, and German from elementary school, while speaking Vietnamese at home.

You'll notice the few that were not lucky enough to be exposed to several languages from birth only have a couple C1 certificates at best, if they list their levels at all (most outside the first page don't). And they're always related languages like the one guy that has C1 in Spanish, Portuguese, and Catalan, although I won't quibble too much over that. The point still holds that there are very few genuine self-taught polyglots that know more than 2-3 languages to a high level.

Yeah yeah I get you. I’m having the same train of thought too, that after a certain point in the frequency list, acquisition in context becomes borderline seamless. I picked up a bunch of obscure terms reading Latin lately super easily, and it’s literally the first time i’ve seen them and probably the last for some time, but I got them like nothing because it’s embedded within an existing semantic framework.

Like I could compose right now
>triciti modium X milia polliceri coegit
With tritici and modium technically being 2 new words I got from one sentece, both being the first time I’ve seen them (basically a specific unit for measuring grain, and a specific term for flour) and probably the last for a long time, but it’s just in my brain now.
Whitepilling.

>>224272038
I know one guy who speaks 7 supposedly but yeah he’s had a very international life story
>>
>>224269527
The point being that I’m glad to find there really does seem to be a threshold where vocabulary expands both rapidly and with ease. There’s a latin author named Comenius who basically invented education for kids, and he wrote a book called the Janua Linguarum Reserata (gate of tongues unlocked) which was the most widely translated book in Europe besides the bible since it was basically just a mini-encyclopedia that grouped terms together thematically, so in 1,000 entries it had something like 8,000 lemmata since there was minimal repetition of terms. While I’m really enjoying my mining workflow right now, I keep wanting to grind it.

I started reading the golden pavillion the other day with a few word looks ups per page, and tonight I watched a Japanese documentary about the fukushima nuclear power incident without any major issues. It seems that I'm learning Japanese just fine.

No shit. Commute learners are fundamentally unserious. You can maybe review material to pass the time, but you're not making real gains unless you sit down and focus properly.

>>224263311
The pro is that you are much more likely to encounter the vocab in inpoot and therefore speed up the process of acquisition, there is no con. Learning vocab grouped by theme isn't very useful for beginners. Maybe down the line, if you know you have a specific vocab gap for a specific domain, you can prime it i.e. names of kitchen utensils before watching cooking shows.

>>224256083
I've never had the need to take notes, but if I did, I imagine that doing it digitally is much more convenient and efficient, since you can easily pop the word into a dictionary or into Anki.

From my perspective, it looked like I wouldn't be a hyperpolyglot anyways and I had to give up certain languages that are still cool and the dilemma was which ones to give up and which ones to tie my future to (or plan to tie, because I don't need anything other than Polish and basic English for now). I also thought that learning two languages or more would not be a problem, after all, you just need to repeat a few new words from one language and then another, watch content in one language and then in another
>>224273768
I mean, it's fine for revisions, you're right, but my modus operandi was to learn in the meantime to minimize wasting time. On the way to work, at work and on the way from work mostly. Now I've discovered that I was effective, sure, but in wasting time. There's also no point in studying at work, because I can't slack off so much. It's over for an unc.
I'm comforted only by the fact that I could have been a bigger fool and listened to podcasters or smoething

I want at least Latin, German and French, which I think is doable, but Ancient Greek and Italian would be very nice too, but if I had to choose, I would add Ancient Greek

>Commute learners are fundamentally unserious. You can maybe review material to pass the time, but you're not making real gains unless you sit down and focus properly.

I don't think that's entirely true. The bulk of my Spanish "study" time is listening to podcasts while I'm doing something else, and I still feel like I'm making incremental process. Sure, I also watch videos at my desk or lying about at home, but it's fundamentally the same thing, I think.

Latin literature of all periods is often of excellent quality
>>
>>224281595
You have to be a certain level to get any benefit from passively listening to podcasts, I don't think beginners should be spending the bulk of their time "learning" on their commute where their focus is going in and out and they gloss over shit they don't understand because pulling up a transcript and doing lookups while driving just isn't that convenient.

the study i posted earlier said that learning vocab aurally is inferior to learning through reading. for reading, you are allowed to stop and dwell or reread a sentence, but rewinding a recording is a pain in the ass

Once you know French, Spanish becomes easy, and once you know Spanish, Portuguese becomes trivial. I have experience learning some of these languages off of each other and know how easy it can be compared to Japanese.

Learning Japanese is more like learning French, German, and Russian combined. Maybe swap Russian for something slightly easier and not closely related to the other two, but it's in the ballpark either way.

It's funny how the names keep the meaning but sound completely different. Meanwhile here I'm surrounded by place names that have been said the same way for thousands of years but I don't have the slightest idea what many of them mean.

nope. you could try some of Joyce's other writings first. Dubliners is pretty normal/standard writing. "a portrait of the artist as a young man" is a little harder to read. These could help you figure out if you actually like Joyce as a writer at all. I like Dubliners, didn't like Portrait that much. There are also many different ulysses editions, I believe, with different editing choices.
