Today marks the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Mohács which was one of the biggest catastrophes of Hungarian history.Since the Jagiello king died on the battlefield, the country descended into a civil war. The Turks took advantage of this and a few years later occupied central Hungary as well as the country's capital Buda. West and North Hungary recognized the Habsburg as the new rightful king of Hungary. Transylvania formed a new mini Hungarian state in the East and became a semi-independent Ottoman protectorate. As a consequence of these developments Hungary turned into an active warzone between the two superpowers of the early modern period which stunted our development for 150 years and irrevertably changed the country's ethnic makeup. By the end of the 17th century Hungarians became a minority in their own country.

>>224286001That was also quite a big of a catastrophe in terms of loss of human lives but the Soviets would have steamrolled Europe anyway whereas the tragic events after Mohács could have been avoided if we hadnt lost the battle this decisively or if the king at least hadnt died.
