Retard and his three brothers were active during Napoleonic Wars as army officers, got medals, lands, and awards for their services. After also serving in campaigns against Qajar controlled Iran, they sold everything they had in Russia, came to Gilan province, converted to Shia Islam, then married three sisters (each brother got one of the sisters) who were the only heirs of a very wealthy and powerful local landowner. Now that I think about it I'm glad he had the chance to be old and fairly well-off in a peaceful period where he could spend a lot of time with me as I grew up.His dad, my paternal great-grandfather collaborated with the anti-fascist in my region and at the end of WW2 in Trieste he was supposedly offered by the British to move to Britain with his family but he refused. He lived to be over 100 years old and was one of my two ancestors that I met who were born in Austria-Hungary.
