"Deer" is originally the general Germanic word for "animal". "Reindeer" is "rein animal", and just called a "ren" in Swedish. You can say "rendjur" too, but it's redundant.

Deer are over-populated in my area, and hunting them is somewhat encouraged by the state (I think the hunting seasons are longer than they were in the 1990's, for example).

Reindeer are the stupidest animals on the planet. They are owned by Saami and some finns. they are basically cows that are allowed to roam around causing traffic accidents etc. They are not hunted but farmed. Moose are plentiful and hunted. Imc. you have to be part of a hunting team and each team has a defined geographic are where they are allowed to hunt, then each team is given permits on how many moose they are allowed to fell. These hunting teams are also notoriously nepotistic and gatekeep people from joining so they can have more meat for themselves. They are basically medieval guilds, both in mindset and function.
