Everyone says to READ if you want to gain exposure to large amounts of vocabulary / less commonly encountered vocabulary. I don't feel like that really helps as much with chinese due to the large of correspondence with the written and spoken language. It feels like you have to learn two languages that happen to permit 1 to 1 translation.

Old wisdom back in the 60s was actually to teach spoken Mandarin separately from written Mandarin, because at least for the most common words, once you had the actual meaning of the sounds down it was relatively easy to then just learn what characters matched it. Defrancis Chinese is a great example where the main textbook, intended for classroom use, is pinyin and english only, while they published a supplemental volume that was the identical text as the main textbook but with all english and pinyin replaced with hanzi. Then the reader was a massive 1000 page 500-1000 page beast for each of the 3 levels of the series.

It's been less than two months of slow but steady learning, and I still can't write poems, read anything that isn't silly, or watch things without subtitles. I'm making SOME progress, but this crap takes forever. Tofugu has two PDF files with cool mnemonic techniques for learning the syllabary (Renshuu also has its own tips made by community I think). This book was made specifically to fuck with spanish second langaugers, it switches who it's talking about constantly, never EVER talks directly and always in strange metaphors or references, and at some point just makes up words.There was a point where there's just a french conversation injected into the book with no translation and no explanation as to what it could mean, either.
