In the 90's and early 2000's, American broadcasting companies often changed the script of the anime they aired or edited some details, in order to americanize it as much as possible and remove references to anything Japanese.This was done because the old generation that lived through WWII would be furious to see that their grandchildren were watching cartoons made by their enemies, and could send angry letters to the TV stations, or worse, sue them.

If this was the case they would have censored the original Shogun series in the 1980s.
