In the 90's and early 2000's, American broadcasting companies often changed the script of the anime they aired or edited some details, in order to americanize it as much as possible and remove references to anything Japanese.
This was done because the old generation that lived through WWII would be furious to see that their grandchildren were watching cartoons made by their enemies, and could send angry letters to the TV stations, or worse, sue them.

That's not why we change dialogue.

Adapting the dialogue is pretty common for translations, since they often prioritize the audience relating to what is being said rather than maintaining 100% fidelity to what was originally said.
This is specially common with jokes and things that are way too local. Like in the picture, I doubt many kids in the 90's would know what a onigiri was, or, for example translating 'oni' as something like 'goblin'.

I think it's nice to keep it as close as possible, though. It's a nice way to teach kids about different elements from different cultures.

They don't need to say onigiri but they could have said rice ball or rice cake. It clearly isn't a donut.

You were 100% right tho

In the Japanse videogame Drakengard, the main antagonist is a god who wants to destroy the Human species, this god is evil and causes much suffering to Humans. In the Japanese release of the game, this malevolent deity is only referred to in the singular as 'god', but in the English release of the game, all references to this deity were changed to the plural 'gods' so as not to offend Christians.

What they did to pokemon was minor aside from delete the episode where James morphed into a woman. For Sailor Moon they removed the entire gay romance entirely and altered the script so it didn't have a trace of it.

WOW Lately, I’ve been fed up with /int/ constantly badmouthing Japan, but it’s really interesting to learn that something like this happened in the past

He made it up btw it was 10 years after the Cold War ended and the new generation already had no hate for Japan. If this was the case they would have censored the original Shogun series in the 1980s. They wanted to make it understandable for children so they gave foreign objects familiar names and if there was anything homosexual in the cartoon they would remove it.

GI generation old fogies were already dying off by the end of the 90s.

Someone who was a teenager when the Pearl Harbor attack happened would be in his 70s in the 90's and could very well harbor a hatred for the Japanese even if he never participated in the war.
