In the Japanse videogame Drakengard, the main antagonist is a god who wants to destroy the Human species, this god is evil and causes much suffering to Humans. In the Japanese release of the game, this malevolent deity is only referred to in the singular as 'god', but in the English release of the game, all references to this deity were changed to the plural 'gods' so as not to offend Christians.
I must admit I have not played, but from what I have seen, great atmosphere that captures the desperation of the situation.
