Chinese people, who came here overwhelmingly from southern china, are hard workers with strong business acumen. They also have connections with their family in the mainland. They call this the bamboo network. All of this is true and shouldn't be downplayed.But it is also true that Chinese economic dominance in Indonesia would not have been possible without colonial interference. The Dutch sought to maintain a monopoly over trade, so they took over native trading ports in order to stop them from being able to trade with anyone else. Native elites, who used to also conduct in trade, were instead coerced into becoming more of a feudal lord overseeing cash crop plantations. Not that feudalism didn't exist before Europeans came, but before peasants used to be able to put up a resistance if the lords were too brutal. After colonization, this wasn't possible anymore because now colonial troops help the lords put down any rebellion.The Chinese on the other hand, were already around for hundreds of years as merchants in the region. Under the colonial system, they acted as the perfect middlemen to trade with locals without being able to accumulate too much political power. They became tax collectors, moneylenders. The Dutch would support this, and often only allow Chinese merchants to do this kind of work in rural areas. Over time, the pre existing native mercantile class was destroyed, and replaced with a racialized Chinese merchant class.
