For a long time my goal was to get to HSK-5 in chinese. I thought that would allow me to comprehend chinese at a low level. I am currently at 2100 mature hsk cards in anki and feel nowhere near good enough to say I can understand chinese.I really don't want to commit to the grind of HSK-6, but otherwise I might not have anything to show for the effort I've put in already.

I know when I was at around 2k mature vocab for Japanese even reading casual manga aimed at kids and teens took constant dictionary look ups and unknown characters, grammar and figures of speech were everywhere. My general gutt feeling is that to understand an Asian language you need maybe 3 times as much vocab to comprehend it on the same level as a romance or germanic one.

>>224633818why not try to get a high level in the one you're in and then try to get to a high level in the next? it doesn't seem to make sense to dabble in a bunch of languages which would slow down the time it takes for you to cement your understanding of the stuff you're learning about that one language when you're zipping through another one-to-however-many other languages you're wanting to learn. i've got no papers, no statistics and no anything as definitive proof but my presumed understanding that you'll just get more out of it if you stick to just one until you want to do go on and do another

Did anyone else here use to struggle with English pronunciation? I just realized how much I butcher it when I talk. I kind of get what is wrong with it but I'm kind of tone deaf and my mouth defaults to Spanish sounds
