I've been living in Japan for a couple of years now and there's something I still don't understand. Any time I see a Southeast Asian person in Japan, if it's in public and not at a workplace during work hours, 9 times out 10 they will be on a videocall with somebody - max volume, no headphones - as they're going about doing whatever they're doing. Shopping at the grocery store? On a video call. Sitting at Starbucks? On a video call. Walking down the street? Video call. They seem to be completely oblivious to their surroundings or the people in their vicinity. Just the other day there was a group of SEA sitting at a table when I went to McDonald's, three were talking amongst themselves and one was sitting there on a video call off in his own world, the person on the other end screaming and laughing and chattering. It was so loud that the McDonald's employee had to come out from behind the register to shush them - do you have any idea how much of a ruckus you have to be causing for a Japanese wagie to do that?What is going on in their lives that's so important where they need to be in touch with relatives 100% of the time? Why can't they ever do anything by themselves silently? I feel that the people you see doing this most often are Filipinos since they speak what seems to be gobbledygook spattered with Spanish, but I'm sure all SEAs are guilty of it. I'm desperately trying to understand this behavior.
