Spain was already on its deathbed around 1650-1700 and was virtually kept preserved by England and other continental powers cause they didn't want it to be swallowed up by France. It was weakened enough by mid-late 17th century that the empire probably could have been split up by other colonial powers but hadn't to keep a balance of power. If it wasn't for England's and Austria's intervention, the whole empire would have ended up under France.
