Raids were based on hit-and-run tactics, where they grabbed whatever they could and left as soon as possible. Actual invasions didn't go well for them, either lost a lot of troops or got repelled. Even at that point, Asia was already behind Europe in technology and in a confined battlefield the crossbows and plate armor won the day.
