I loved the Byzantine Empire, until I learned they lacked literally all of the qualities, which made the Roman Empire great. They were basically the antithesis of Rome and the West. When I learned the truth about Manzikert, that it wasn't a catastrophic military defeat, but just Byzantine Greeks betraying each other over and over again, preferring to give forts, towns and cities to the invading Turks rather than their opponents in a civil war and then just let the marauding Turks alone for decades, which led to them create actual states, I took back everything positive I ever said about the Byzantine Empire.

A short mention about the Roman Empire being split in two. Then 1 hour of a general overview, mostly focusing on the reign of Justinian I. Then like a year later later 1 hour about the rise of the Ottomans and Fall of Constantinopole, with a particular focus on the Battle of Varna.
In general, the Empire has little presence in general culture or interest over here.
