This is mister Kaor Yamomoto, a farmer from Kagawa prefecture, Japan.For 40 years he sent multiple handwritten letters a week, many thousands, to several Dutch hotels located in and around Amsterdam, notably to hotel Spaander in the fishing town of Volendam.The letter generally had the same contents every time; asking about the weather, thanking for the information, sending his best regards, signed mister Kaor.Nobody ever remembered meeting him.So upon hearing the story, a journalist, Lex Boon, went on an investigation to discover why he kept sending the letters.First he sent a letter back to the sender, with little hopes of an answer, because the address was to the post office in a large industrial site.However, the journalist then started receiving the same letters: Dear sir, how is the weather, thank you for the information, kind regards, signed mister Kaor.So Lex delved deeper and through a Japanese phone company managed to get into contact with Kaor, and invited him to the Netherlands, but he declined the offer, as he had his old father in his care.However, mister Yamomoto welcomed Lex to his home in Japan.Hotel Spaander famously accepts artwork as a form of payment.So, along with Lex went Dutch painter Rinus van Hall to paint his portrait for hotel Spaander, as his letters have become part of the staff's daily routine for decades, and this would be a nice tribute to "Mr. Kaor".The result is pic related.As for the reason why he sent the letters: he just felt like it.He had never been to the Netherlands, and wasn't planning to, but he is fond of Dutch strawberries.And he chose the hotel in Volendam because it starts with the letter V, the 22nd letter of the alphabet, and his birthday is on the 22nd.His portrait hung in hotel Spaander for a while before it got stolen.Mister Kaor still sends the same letters to this day.Does this happen in your country?

>>224841620In the 1980s Polish people would write letters to (mostly German) car companies asking for car catalogues, car photos, keychains with company's logos and things like that, these companies would send this stuff across the world for free as their advertisement campaign but in communist Poland they had great value, like a keychain with Mercedes logo could be exchanged for something else, food, clothes etc. There were templates for these letters 'secretly' exchanged between people, because apparently some worked better than the others. Some people would even try to directly ask for a car, hoping that a big and wealthy western company will do a PR move to grant a car to a poor eastern European but I haven't heard of anyone who would really get it (and the toll at the border would be insane so i don't think it was viable). But at one point these companies realize that they send a lot of these items to Poland but don't get any clients for their cars from there (understandable) so they stopped doing this (and the price of these items in Poland again grew).
