I stayed a few days in Tohoku. Yamadera and Matsushima are really nice, and both make for super easy half-day trips from Sendai.Sendai itself is a great city it has a wide, laid-back atmosphere reminiscent of a European city. It also features a stunning site: Zuihōden Mausoleum, which feels like a mini Nikko. Another highlight is the Gyutan (grilled beef tongue). Bonus point: Sendai Asaichi, a lively morning market that feels far more authentic and local than Tokyo's Tsukiji.Another major highlight in Sendai is the Ruins of the Great East Japan Earthquake: Sendai Arahama Elementary School. You can see the direct impact of the 2011 tsunami. It’s frequently visited by locals, so if you are open to it, you can chat with them about those days. From the museum, you can easily walk down to the coastline. While in Sendai, be sure to try the local oysters as well.

Also, please stay aware of bears when hiking!

I did say renting a car is convenient, but if you’re staying in the city, finding parking can be a real headache. Also, quite a few nature spots restrict private cars altogether. Renting a car is just one way to travel. You can still have a great time relying solely on public transit.
