Why are Poles Catholics when the Pope sanctioned crusades against their ancestors? Poland would have included East Germany were it not for the Wendish crusade.
>>225001626Polabians aren't our ancestors, they are East Germans' ancestors
>>225001626yeah, Poland was Christian by then already. Those pagan Wends (West Slavs) lived in the area of what's now East Germany and this was not Polish territory
>>225001626First of all, we're not Wends, we're Sarmatians. Second of all, these lands were not controlled by Poland at the time, and in fact Poland kind of struggled against the pagans in the north for a while, which is also why they invited the Teutonic Order to the north later on.
>>225001697Imagine being a Wendish leader and the kingdoms around you converted to Christianity(Denmark, Germany, Poland), and those kingdoms are salivating at the prospects of conquering your lands, I feel sorry for the Wends.
>>225001750Poland sided with Germans against their Slavic brothers?
>>225001773Well those pagans in the north were Balts, not slavs, but again - Poles are mighty Sarmatians.
>>225001750>pagans in the norththose were only Baltic Prussians though, right? or did it include some pagan Slavs too?>>225001759yeah I guess. But desu, Christianity meant Latin civilization and it was probably better for the development of the region. Those tribes were comparatively backwards.>>225001773yes, Polish and German Christians fought against Slavic and Baltic pagans. But later on there were battles between German and Polish Christians and German and Polish+Baltic Christians (Lithuanians) too.
>makes some absurd claim about Polabian pagans being Polish>switches to some imagined "Slavic unity" afterwardscongrats on being the most historically illiterate person on this board, it's quite a feat
>>225001833I assumed that if Poland wasn't Christian, Slavic tribes in Germany and Poland would have amalgamated into a larger kingdom, like how the Sorbs got assimilated into the Polish nation.
>>225001626As others have said: the polabian slavs/wends weren't the ancestors of Poland - by the time of the Wendish Crusade the Kingdom of Poland existed since over a century. >>225001759It's a doggy dog world out there.>>225001773They were baltics and the notion of "racial solidarity" never existed. >>225001833To be fair I've seen polish flags here "claim" eastern germany as "100% polish clay" due to the existence of those polabians. They were probably meming but this can influence the perception of some people who base their historical understanding on paraslop games.
>>225001626>Why are Poles CatholicsBecause Russians are orthodox.Everything a pole does is to piss off either a German or a Russian.
>>225001926The christianisation of Poland started in 966 AD. If you want to make an alt-his thread then you need to adjust your timeline. >like how the Sorbs got assimilated into the Polish nation. The vast majority of Sorbs live in Germany and are here a recognised minority.
>>225001926you mean if Poland hadn't been Christian
>>225001750Who you calling a pagan nigga.
bump
>>225001626Poles have been Christian since before Catholic as a subgroup existed. In 1100s we didn't give a shit about pegan hunts
>>225001773We fought Balts, who aren't related to use.
>>225001759The Wends still exist, they weren't completely wiped off, simply their language isn't spoken anymore but the people still live there. Their area close to Hannover is even still called 'Wendland'. And truth is, no one cares. Well, there are still Slavic-speaking Sorbs living in Germany yet hardly anyone cares either, their language will be probably dead within several decades. Funnily enough, it's now the German government which keeps it alive more than anyone else.
>>225006927If only the Pagan uprising had been successful, Poland could have formed a Pagan shield to protect the Wends and the Balts from Christian attacks.
>>225001626germans were nazis even in 12 century, but hey, nazis was not a nation, it was ideology that vanished
>>225007177This "pagan reaction" is mostly a myth and this narrative was especially emphasized in the communist era for ideological reasons, but modern archeological research shows that the churches were left intact so it's highly improbable that this rebellion had strictly religious grounds, most likely it was just a popular uprising against an unsuccessful king, lost wars, higher tax burden, exploitation by elites and so on. Around the time when the rebellion broke out, a very small part of the society was actually baptized, mostly elites, so it's really hard to talk about a "pagan reaction", if basically everyone was effectively pagan to begin with.
>>225007394>a very small part of the society was actually baptized, mostly elites, so it's really hard to talk about a "pagan reaction", if basically everyone was effectively pagan to begin with.I think those Pagans were reacting to the forced Christianisation attempts by their elites.
>>225007457We don't really have enough sources to confirm that. But the king who was a ruler on that time wasn't known to proselytize the commoners in a brutal way (his father was more zealous in this regard but still we know very little because sources from Poland from that era are scarce). And another proof is that when the son of the toppled king returned from exile after a few years, he seized power in the country very easily, without much resistance, even though he continued christianization. It looks like the religion wasn't the main trigger at least. Anyway, unlike for Balts, our pagan history has very little importance for Poles, we generally associate the beginning of our state, culture and nationhood with adopting Christianity and the pagan era is mostly ignored and looked down on as it's associated with backwardness.
>>225007707>It looks like the religion wasn't the main trigger at least. It wasn't the main driver. Heavy taxation to support it's Military, the loss of territorirs under Miezsko II and the Civil Wars between Boleslaw's sons was the main driver.
