They used to be over 70% Catholic still in the 1930s. I don't buy the bullshit story about them turning away from the Church after breaking free from Austria. It's the commies who utterly made them heavily secular.

>In the 1930 Czechoslovak census, 78.6% of the population in the Czech lands ALONE (which EXCLUDES Slovakia and Transcarpathia) identified as Catholic, with the vast majority belonging specifically to the Roman Catholic Church.
>Across Czechoslovakia as a whole, the overall Catholic percentage was slightly lower but still dominant at 73.5%. Although this marked a gradual decline from over 82% in 1921 due to the rise of the newly formed Czechoslovak Hussite Church and secular movements following independence from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Czech population remained overwhelming and overwhelmingly Catholic over the 70% threshold during the 1930s. Even when strictly excluding the deeply Catholic Slovakia, the Bohemian region alone still sat comfortably at or just above the 70% mark, while the broader Czech lands averaged out to nearly 79%.
>However, historians also estimate that in 1930s Bohemia, roughly 30% to 40% of those registered as Catholic actively attended church services.

Fun fact: nowadays Poland is pretty much as Catholic as Czechia was in 1930s, with 71% claiming to be Catholic, with only 28% of Catholics attending church services, according to the 2021 census.

we are kinda obsessed about them, while they barely know about our existence, it's quite funny I admit. We even have "Czechophilia" movement, with clubs and pubs devoted to Czech culture, countless podcasts about life in Czechia and so on. I doubt there is at least one such a place about Poland in all of Czechia.

I think Czech lifestyle is to us kinda what Danish hygge is to Germanic world, just there isn't a catchy word for that yet.

How can they barely know about one of the most important european nations that contributed greatly to this continent's history, literally located right next to their shithole, one of their most important trade partners, and their main vacation spot these days?

you can seethe as much as you want but this is simply true, Czechs are indifferent and ignorant about Poland mostly, they see us just like we see Romania.

Maybe it started to change a bit lately, thanks to Croatia that raised prices enormously so Czechs suddenly discovered (first time) that there is also another, cheaper sea north of them and started coming here, also noticing that Poland isn't like it used to be in the 1980s anymore. But the fact that they needed 40 years to realize that supermarkets in Poland aren't always empty and offer more than mustard and road salt, or that Poland actually has modern highways and not just gravel paths, and this is such news that is worth making vlogs about, says quite a lot about their attitude to us.

I can't blame them because last time when Poland appeared on their TV was when we had martial law I guess.

yeah, that's my point
we have been neighbors for 1500 years, we speak a similar language, there are effectively no borders between us now yet all you know about us is 2-3 stereotypes related to very recent events, mostly negative. There is close to zero cultural exchange between us, it's actually quite weird. But probably proves that Czechs never needed to be interested in Poland.
>>
>>225050313
Still not the point of this thread. It's about how pepiks used to be as religious as Poles are nowadays, because I see some correlation.

Btw, Czechs have an exaggerated obsession with Polish catholicism and they really believe we're still bigots. It's almost like a phobia or something. Stereotypes and shit. Like, their little pepik minds cannot tell difference between religiosity, traditionalism and conservatism.

>>
>>225050577
>Stereotypes and shit.
Wow, almost like we TOTALLY don't see our neighbors through the lens of stereotypes!

Yeah dude, Czechs do mostly point out our catholicism because well...narcissism of small differences, Poles are quite similar to them overall but what keeps us apart is exactly our religiousness vs their atheism so that just sticks out. And it doesn't matter that in the 1930s 30% Czechs would still attend the church if at the same time it was probably like 90% of Poles so the point still stands, Poles were always more religious than Czechs in every decade in the last 200 years.

Don't worry, Czechs have the same 'religious and conservative' stereotype about Slovaks, it's not only us who are singled out with that. Funnily enough, today Czechs and Slovaks are so divided politically so you can see how both Czechs and Slovaks fight for Poles' attention and ask us to become their best friend.
>>
>>225050203
Bulgaria is irreligious like Czechia
>>
>>225050663
Not to mention this 'religiousness' is used as a stereotype within Czechia, like Bohemians tease Moravians with their supposed conservatism and religiousness, then Moravians say the same about rural Silesians (who are already half-Polish in their eyes) and probably both look the same way at Slovaks.
>>
>>225050663
>Poles are quite similar to them overall
Elaborate, please. What traits do we share together?
>it doesn't matter that in the 1930s 30% Czechs would still attend the church if at the same time it was probably like 90% of Poles
Maybe, but guess what: Poland was little over 60% Catholic in contrast to 70% Catholic Czechoslovakia. Mostly because we had tons of minorities living among us (Jews, Ukrainians, Belarusians, Germans, etc.) who mostly weren't Catholic.
>Poles were always more religious than Czechs in every decade in the last 200 years.
So, how did it look like 300-500 years ago?
>Czechs and Slovaks fight for Poles' attention and ask us to become their best friend
I would choose Slovaks any day over pesky Czechs who suck up to Israel.
>>225050664
How can a shithole be less religious than a lesser shithole?
>>
>>225051006
>Elaborate, please. What traits do we share together?
Just compare us both to Indians, Japanese, Congolese, Uruguayans and you will get it

>Poland was little over 60% Catholic in contrast to 70% Catholic Czechoslovakia.

But we are talking about Poles and Czechs, not about citizens of Poland vs citizens of Czechoslovakia here. I guess we don't have exact data for the pre-WW2 Poland divided into nationalities and that's why your comparison might be just unreliable, we lack proper data. Still, the common sense is that Czechs must have been already more atheist than us already back in the interwar period, as we can derive it from indirect proofs, like let's say the propaganda posters from the Polish-Czech war of 1918. The Czech posters presented Poland as ruled by fat catholic bishops while the Polish posters showed Czech soldiers destroying crosses and churches like bolsheviks. Which means these stereotypes were already strongly rooted back then and obviously didn't come out of nowhere.

>So, how did it look like 300-500 years ago?
Probably everyone was religious by default, at least superficially. No one would admit being atheist openly because whether in Poland (Łyszczyński case) or in Germany or in France, such a person would be sentenced to death.

>I would choose Slovaks
Real truth is that there is no friendship between nations, just interests.
>>
>>225049336
Czechia and Slovakia don't have the right to exist. Poland is the only relevant West Slavic nation and we should establish TPD (Total Polish Dominance) over them. We also retake formerly Slavic territories from Germany and forcefully Polonize the people who live there. We also reclaim our former colonies that have fallen into Lithuanian, Belarusian and Ukrainian hands
>>
>>225051229
>these stereotypes were already strongly rooted back then and obviously didn't come out of nowhere
It's where they started, actually. Only godless people would betray Poland during their fight with bolsheviks and later form a mutual assistance pact in 1935 with USSR just because they feared another evil from hell of a country: Nazi Germany.
>>
>>225051638
>It's where they started, actually.
if they were used to mobilize local population to fight on either side then it means they must have been already widely known, no one would go to fight for an ad hoc made up stereotype.

And the same sentiment about godless Czechs is already exhibited in 19th century books. There were a lot of Czech officials sent by the Austrian government to Galicia and people generally didn't like them, mostly for corruption/not caring about local population and their supposed godlessness was blamed for that (in most cases it was just that those Czech officials would be the only educated people surrounded by illiterate peasants and for peasants their modern, urban lifestyle was godless itself).
>>
I dated a Czech girl from Prague and she was a devoted catholic. I had to stop making jokes about religion cause she didn't like them. None of that had anything to do with us splitting up but the experience made me realize I don't want to be with someone who values religion
>>
>>225051863
Actually, devoted is inaccurate and too strong. She was a larper that clearly only respevted the things she liked but not the things she didn't like. Otherwise she wouldn't have had sex with me because what devoted religious person has sex before marriage?
>>
>>225049336

>>

afaik hygge is very big in all of northern Europe now which includes Germany as well, idk about Austria, maybe you get more Italian influences and Italian culture is hygge x1000 just they don't need catchy names for that because everyone knows Italy is like that
>>
>>225051971
it doesn't matter what is objectively true but what history the nation tells itself to justify its national choices. If Czechs built their national myths upon "bad Austria forcibly imposing catholicism on them" then it's a legit explanation for them, even if historically false.
>>
>>225052001
Well yeah culturally we have more to do with our neighbours like slovenia than denmark, the nordics or whatever
>>
>>225051006
>How can a shithole be less religious than a lesser shithole?
Because contrary to early 2000s gaytheist propaganda in Westerns countries, that is now still popular among younger online people from countries like Poland, Romania and Ukraine think it's the hot new thing. being gaytheist doesn't make a country, or an individual, more intellectually superiors by default.

A retard would still be retard if you convince him to worship ecelebs, horoscopes and whores instead of God. It won't make him and enlightened intellectual.
This extends to countries as well.
Yes, some rich ones like Scandinavians are atheist, and also have catastrophic low birthrates and other problems, but so are poorer less developed ones like the many part of Russia or Bulgaria, or East Germany of you compare it to West Germany.
>>
>>225052107
Yeah, I believe even Germans have that stereotype that Austria is already 'half-Balkan' or half-Med. Wasn't it one of your kaisers who said something like that the Balkans start south of the Sudbanhof?

Maybe your lifestyle could be as popular as Danish, if only you could make up a cool name for that. Remember, it cannot have more than 6 letters so nothing like Panzerkampfenwagen should come to your mind.

Maybe, I guess this quote, like all famous quotes was probably paraphrased and attributed to many different people many times. Anyway, the point still stands, I guess when a person from Hamburg arrives in Klagenfurt he does feel kinda like in the Balkans/Mediterranean. It was probably even more pronounced in the past when Austria owned lands like Bosnia or Trieste, but the stereotype is still present.

When Poland was divided by three empires, we had a saying
>In Prussia you don't bribe anyone, yet you get things done
>In Austria you need to bribe someone but you get things done
>In Russia you need to bribe everyone and nothing gets done.

so even here Austria was associated with typical "Balkan" traits, I guess it was probably even more in Germany. I'm talking about stereotypes, don't take it too seriously.

>>225052523
not sure if its necessarily balkan or a general "east european" stereotype but yes, its not entirely untrue, even in welfare orgs theres some corruption and nepotism among politicians here is the norm

i dont think they have palms in hamburg to be fair

>this cross with a crescent
peak Balkan experience, that's like a little Bosnia indeed

I think Austria actually should sell this "Balkan" image more as it would make it even more attractive rather than posing as a truly Germanic (aka boring and uptight) country. Leave the latter for SauPruBians.
>>
>>225052877
the monument was originally about the plague, later modified with the victory over the turks adding a cross over the crescent

>rather than posing as a truly Germanic (aka boring and uptight) country.

i think thats only a foreign perception, and most tourists wont come out just to do what the normal austrian does (get drunk, or drink to eat a Heuriger if wine with food is prefered) but go to Vienna or Salzburg, most people know we speak german and thats it (although we dislike actually speaking standard german)

Is there some explanation then why Czech political elites supported this non-partisan, raised during the Habsburgs' rule, deeply catholic conservatist to be elected the president of Czechoslovakia during the difficult times of 1938?

Clearly you can't tell me it's because Czechs tried to stay in Slovak separatists' good graces who were led at the time by a literal priest (Tiso)?
>>
>>225053118
I've noticed on the internet that modern Austrians generally don't like being called Germans and they also don't like how the standard German culture dominates their own media sphere. I also heard that expats from Germany in Vienna often report that they feel unwelcome because apparently they boost rent prices (Vienna always boasted about having very affordable housing). Idk if it's really a rising sentiment or it's just exaggerated for clickbait purposes.

>and most tourists wont come out just to do what the normal austrian does

Maybe most tourists from outside the DACH sphere but I guess for DACHians, Austria is kinda the place you go specially for drinking wine and enjoy lighter, more italian-style cuisine, if you don't want to leave the German language area. I mean, probably most go specifically to Sudtirol for that but well, after all what Sudtirol is was historically shaped by Austria.

I know that in Polish language there was an expression "Austrian/Viennese happiness" that was quite popular before WW1/WW2, now it's gone. But maybe that's what your hygge was/is.
>>

I genuinely don't see anything non-German about Austrians.
That goes for the Slav part but also for whatever Balkan/Med thing people said in the past comments.
Minor things like having some restaurants in Vienna with dishes from those parts doesn't matter much.
I think this just intra-German "narcissism of small differences" and how every group seem to think of itself as very diverse.
>>
>>225053874
like you want a ukrainian to integrate into polish society too i imagine

Depends on the person but some apperantly get annoyed when theyre not talked to in standard german, even if not tourists i guess it might also be a older generation of germans when they were more arrogant in general compared to the "little poorer neighbour" at the time
>>
>>225054126
i mean, what is small and what is a big difference is obviously up to you
from a true Balkaner perspective like that of a Romanian, obviously Austria has nothing Balkan in itself but from north Germans it is surely already Balkanish in a sense.
It's the same how Romanians see Transylvanians as uptight, hard working, less talkative etc. etc. while Wallachians would be the opposite, while from any outsider's perspective all Romanians are the same.
>>
>>225054170

was it ever a case when Austria was noticeably poorer than Germany? I thought you were more or less the same. Especially that Germans have their Ossis to make a real contrast.

He was easy to manipulate and intimidate. He wasn't the firmest of type. Quite the opposite.

His humiliation done by Hitler and his passiveness towards Germans is the sole reason why Czechs are seen as cowards and opportunists by Poles. It's just this one guy out of the whole Czech nation that caused this stereotype, even though most of Czechs wanted to fight. It's a fine example how political decisions do not reflect the nation's thinking.
