you christians know literally nothing about the Torah. Noah had a covenant with God
>>
>>225109042
Was just using it as a shorthand/set phrase to not sperg out about the theology. But also Christians have used gentile(goyim) in many eras to refer to non Christians, I’ve encountered it in medieval and early modern texts.

Besides that, the Torah is really ours anyways. I doubt you’re even actually part of the tribe though since you’re acting like a LARPer.

I currently am going through a collector phase, and I'm thinking about collecting books in other languages.
Does anyone here do that?
Also I really want to collect some retro games in different languages, from the time when games used to only get released in a single language.

10 neue Wörter in Anki sind die übliche Empfehlung, aber du kannst auch 100 pro Tag lernen, es gibt keine Regel.

I buy whatever books in foreign languages I find at garage sales, most of the time they're slop, but they're like a dollar or a little more at more expensive thrift stores - I was in a college town's thrift store and there were a ton of secondhand language books there.
>>225111564
I don't have a max, I just do it until I'm tired of doing it and have hit my goals. Putting arbitrary maximums on yourself is a good way to remain a dabbler.

according to my own stats attention appears to start to go down when introducing more than 60-70 words a day. this is also around the amount suggested by studies.

60-70 words is easy at first but will eventually build up into a large review burden. its doable but will become very time consuming after a few months if kept up.

should also use keyboard keys or controller (not mouse) when reviewing cards and aim to review quickly. The actual official fsrs and anki data shows that there is no retention benefit to spending more time on a card. Trying to sit and retrieve the meaning just wastes time and energy. doubling speed simply gives you twice the results in the same amount of time and is more important than any other factor, so review speed should be the main priority. I used to struggle to do 1000 review actions in a day when I first started, and now sometimes do 3000 reviews within a day.

slop challenge canadian anon edition

>Easy
1. I feel sad when I cannot make a sentence.
2. I study new words every day, but I still make many mistakes.
3. Can you help me say this in my new language?

> Medium
4. I know what I want to say, but I cannot find the words quickly enough.
5. When I try to speak, the sentences that seemed easy in my head suddenly become difficult.
6. I was happy with my progress last week, even though I still had trouble putting words together.

> Hard
7. Although I can understand much of what I hear, I become frustrated when I have to produce a sentence myself, because the words I know seem to disappear at that moment.
8. ā€œI know this word,ā€ I told myself, pausing in the middle of the sentence, ā€œso why can’t I use it here?ā€
9. While I am slowly learning how the language works, I sometimes wonder whether my inability to form sentences reflects a lack of knowledge or simply the stage of learning I am going through.

Just learned arguments of verbal nouns in small clauses don't use genitive due to the inversion.

Also perhaps iarraidh also takes a small clause, so the a^L is not needed?

ĀæPuedes ayudar me a decir esto en mi nuevo idioma?

Yo se que quiero decir, pero no puedo locar las palabras suficiamente rapido.
Cuando tento a hablar, senetencias que pareceban faciles de repente se hacen difficiles.
Era contento sobre mi progreso la semana pasada (Āæo tengo decir "la ultima semana?), aunque estaba en problemas de conjugar palabras.

I'll stop there. I'm totally guessing at the last one. I'm guessing "conjugar" is not the right word, because it probably means conjugating verbs like in English.

Yeah I don't consume anything in my TL that could potentially be written by SSL's, they all use unnatural word choices and basic grammar choices that a native wouldn't use, even if they're technically correct they're never going to sound native.
And I see it somewhat with what you linked but stopped reading pretty fast, when they mention their country of origin is anything but an english country they seem to write extremely basic sentences at all times.

Sometimes it's not even the grammar or word choice, but the subject itself, a native would never talk about themselves in that particular way while interacting with that particular thing.

The classic mistake of going to kids media for ā€œeasyā€ input. You’re an adult, your brain craves scaffolding and context. Unironically just go watch the news or something (especially because the news for romance/English heavily uses inter-European vocab)

>Watch news
>Watch some learner podcasts, possibly with transcripts, watch MULTIPLE TIMES if you don't get it
>If you're watching incomprehensible input it's not really doing much for you, it actually has to be comprehensible. This is why they say comprehensible, because you have to understand it literally 98% for the most benefit from it
>Don't try to grind things that are too hard, you have to understand it a certain amount to grow most. Listening to c2 material when you're a1 won't help at all really
Follow the basic tricks for boosting comprehension for noobs
>Watch material that doesn't use a lot of idioms and fancy words - this means content specifically designed for beginners, street interviews, the news, podcasts
>Have an area you specialize in to artificially inflate your level - listen to the same people with the same accent about the same topics until you're artificially b2 in that area even if you're a2 everywhere else. This helps you escape baby media earlier
>Rewatch until it's actually comprehensible. You gain almost nothing first run with 80% comprehension, but if you rewatch and it goes up to 90%+ you will be gaining something.

I am making a distress call to any langbros who have made progress learning mandarin. I am potentially moving to Taiwan permanently later this year and I really want to put all my effort into at least getting past the beginner stages when I land

I would really, really appreciate any recs and guidance on books, inpoot sources, resources etc. obviously if it is taiwan or traditional character focused it would be ideal, but really anything that you felt helped or aided you would be nice to have

pic related is my kot as a form of appreciation in advance

My "advice" is just some resources since I just dabbled for a couple months as a project.

Learn the Zhuyin (bopomofo)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onsIEvJxuoo
This shit's like a reinforcement loop that will ingrain every sound in Mandarin (with the added bonus that the speakers are Taiwanese) rapidly if you just sing along to it on the daily. It worked rapidly for me, and the sounds stuck with me.

Defrancis Chinese is a textbook series I can highly recommend in physical print. It's antiquated so there's specific issues (xiaojie in Taiwan is slang for women of the night or something IIRC) but the old fashioned sentence-drilling approach is absolute gold for learning an analytic language. The main textbooks, in classic college fashion, actually teach a relatively constrained vocabulary, but teach basically completely all grammar needed, and ultimately the 1200 characters taught are expanded upon in the companion readers to a really absurd amount of compound vocab depending on how you count it. [For this reason something like Pimsleur also might be quite effective since it's phrase-spamming, but it involves no reading, which is a blessing and a curse]

Reading is GOATed. Don't let Hanzi intimidate you, do whatever you need to to learn how to break down characters and it makes them not intimidating.

>>

You only have 2 months or less, you aren't really that different.
You have to actually unironically do like 10 hours a day to reach the level you want to reach in that time. If you were different you would have already learned said lang to said level, best you can do now is double down and study 16 hours a day.

The target demographic is preteen girls...and men aged 25-40. No joke. There was some page from internal marketing material that circulated that showed exactly that.
Anyway anything aimed at grade schoolers is going to use normal language, though with some care to avoid rare vocab unless called for. For example in card captor sakura her spell to return the cards to their original form uses the archaic second person pronoun nanji, obviously for the purpose of making it feel more like an old magical spell. Good show, and you can read the manga in advance to make it easier to follow.

2 months is more than enough time to at least get stuck in in the grind so you’re ready to make a ton of progress while you’re in Taiwan. If you can hear the sounds, distinguish the tones, and have enough core vocab to start learning by interacting with people, you’ll be in a great position.

Thanks for the corrections. I haven't spent much time reading, so I know my spelling is una mierda. "Ninguna" is what I was reaching for, I think. "Ni una" is what popped into my head, but I think it (or something close to it) can mean something like "not even a single." For "parecĆan" I was thinking I needed to use the "ia" form, but then I had "estaban" pop into my head and I second guessed myself.

For the adjective-noun word order, "nuevas palabras" is how it came to my mind, and I think my instincts might be correct in those examples. This article says that certain adjectives (not just the shortened ones) can go before or after their noun, with different senses depending on the position.

https://grammar.collinsdictionary.com/spanish-easy-learning/what-is-the-word-order-with-spanish-adjectives

The examples in the table for "nuevo" are consistent with how I thought about it. I think "palabras nuevas" sounds overly emphatic. I don't know how an actual native speaker would interpret it, but I might interpret it as in words that someone just made up that didn't exist before, whereas "nuevas palabras" are just standard words that are new to me.

I'm so fucking lonely bros...
>>
Some notes others might find interesting. I’ve been plunking my way through a 5k frequency deck of French at 10 new cards a day. I’m suspending cards that are transparent in meaning without relying on the context of the sample sentence, and I’d say I’m being fairly conservative since words like ā€œsoulignerā€ (which is transparently ā€œunderineā€) I kept since their use as ā€œemphasizeā€ escaped me. I have some quite limited and quite distant French experience, but I would say my reading level in Latin is about C1 in some domains (with a lot of caveats).

What I found was that at ~860 cards in, I have suspended around 710 as transparent cognates. This is unsurprising due to Latin + English carryover. However, what I find interesting is that the highest amount of unknowns/non-cognates were actually in the sub-500 range, while the past couple sessions I’ve suspended close to 100 cards for every 10 new cards. My theory is that since the most common words are the core syntactic glue that makes a language distinct, that the non-cognates in Romance are disproportionately concentrated there. To confirm this, I scrolled through the 3000-5000 range and found an even more stark ratio of cognates:non-cognates.

The encouraging takeaway from this is that it illustrates just how achievable vocabulary coverage for reading is in French, and I can imagine that the same set of ā€œinternational vocabularyā€ occupies roughly the same role in other romance langs. It shows that if you target your reading to stuff that leans heavily on international vocabulary you can go into adult native input basically immediately. For example, I have an encyclopedia of French philosophy, and found I could comprehend most of a given page day one if I read carefully, with the unknowns being extremely frequent non-cognates like ā€œrienā€ that I picked up rapidly due to how common they were.

I figure this is what enables interlingua to be intelligible to Romance and English readers.
>>
Now, to fantasize about language learning for a minute. People always say ā€œLatin helps with Romanceā€ but the question is why and how to make use of that. 2 things are clear, 1. Later Latin is closer to Romance 2. Reading natively as early as possible is ideal.

Therefore we ought to, once reading fluency in Latin is established, pick a text that has a small vocabulary, is repetitive/formulaic, and can be recycled through each language. Redditors will say Harry Potter, but I would say even that is too long and difficult. Instead, I think it’s feasible for one who has read the gospels + acts in Latin to basically just grind a frequency deck in a given romance language for a month and then read the gospels + acts through once or twice. From there enough basic vocabulary/syntax will be solid that one could just keep bridging to other approachable texts until they’re satisfied.
>>
>>225165260
Romance languages - especially French and Spanish - are essentially baby-tier level of difficulty for native Anglophones, and the advantages conferred by knowing Latin in learning them are pretty minimal. If you want to learn a Romance language then you're better off just starting with that language.

Knowing Latin can definitely help in learning Romance languages to some degree, but it wouldn't be worthwhile to learn Latin solely for the purpose of studying other languages afterwards. If you have a genuine interest in Latin then the coincidental benefits it confers in this area are just a bonus.
