>>225164445They found a tea plant that was native to India when they were looking for alternatives, they just couldn't figure out how to process it correctly until industrial methods were developed for it ~50 years later. Once they had it the Indian tea overtook Chinese tea but the Chinese were already addicted to opium so it was too late.
