Melayu (Malay) is an Austronesian ethnic group that was predominant in Nusantara. The Indons spoke hundreds of languages and somehow, we Malaysians persuaded them to adopt the Johor-Riau Malay dialect as their (and our) Standard Malay Language, similar to how you speak Standard German. We even convinced them to adopt our English-based orthography instead of their Dutch-based system. As is their wont, Indons then stamped their ugly name on the language and claims it's theirs.
