For me, what's fascinating is the idea so established that Northern Italians are whiter than Northern Spaniards. Genetically speaking, there's far more variance between North-South Italy than between North-South Spain, with South Italy, Greece and Cyprus being the "bridge" between Europeans and MENAs, not spain.
What people don't realize is this was partially a Germanics vs everyone else thing, but also a Protestants vs Catholics thing.French were discriminated against too up until the 19th century.
