So what exactly is the italian language? Cause apparently lots of dialects can't understand eachother at all.
>>
There are three main families, italo-dalmatian (basically everywhere except Friuli and the northeast), italo-gaul (Piedmontese, Lombard, Friulan), Sardinian.

The italo dalmatians were all mostly mutually intelligible bit not that it mattwrs since young kids dont speak them at all.

A conlang loosely based on the florentine dialect
>Cause apparently lots of dialects can't understand eachother at all.
Depends, Tuscan and Roman dialects are overall mutually intelligible with standard italian, the others could be considered separate languages, but it doesn't matter anymore, shitalian authorities did everything they could to erase them, and young people don't speak them anymore

Like all national languages they just picked one language spoken in one region and then changed its name the country's name.

c'mon he doesn't look like average mehmet lol

Venetian, tuscan, roman and neapolitan are all close and intelligible to various degrees, obviously with the closer languages being easier to understand

I can understand Tuscan and Roman, Neapolitan is absolute gibberish to me
>>
>>225508707
There are two neapolitans, the one spoken in ghettoes and neapolitan proper.

It doesn't matter, i don't understand any of it
And it's not just Neapolitan either, i'm in the north and i've witnessed many times when an elderly person says something in the local dialect to a zoom zoom who only knows standard shitalian they respond with "what?"
You really can't say most dialects are mutually intelligible with italian, it's just not true

He can pass as my brother or close relative.

Oh and here's another funny anecdote: in high school a teacher made us watch La Terra Trema (a neorealist movie from the 40s where everyone speaks Sicilian) and the only version he could find on the internet was one with spanish subtitles, and as i watched i unironically understood better the spanish subs than whatever the fuck the actors were saying lol

do young people actually speak regional languages in Italy or is it like most of europe where only old people speak them and young people maybe incorporate some words into standard italian?

It's like Modern Standard Arabic, which was created as a fake national language to talk to all dialects at once. Mediterraneans of both European and Semitic varities are tribalistic rather than cooperative by nature due to, historically, an abundance of resources/trade without the threat of winter killing you before the year was out. Nordics/Germans, despite their genetic predisposition to autism and the desire to separate themselves from their neighbors and put off sexual relations for as long as possible (read Julius Caesar's account on the Germans for more on this), their environment forces them to cooperate with their neighbors to pool and defend resources. Thus the language dialect intelligibility of northern Europeans are going to be more widespread than those of southern Europeans and Semitics.

In fact it was the taking of Latin and bringing it to northern/western European populations that allowed Latin derivatives (southern European) to spread and cover land like northern European languages. Warm countries, typically, feature huge linguistic differences in their dialects. Cold countries, typically, feature fast-developing linguistic uniformity. This must be due to resources and climate.

From what I've seen, young people are almost nationalistic over their own dialect. This is due to Mediterranean tribalism. Southern Euros and Semites disdain a extra-tribal authority telling them how to speak. They learn it to get ahead and make money, but they disdain it. They always talk about how Italian sounds Florentine. That means they see it as just another tribe imposing itself on them. Regional pride will never let them submit to the national government.
