Why is the SF bay area not one coherent metropolitan authority in the same way NYC or London is?
My guess is all the big corpos lobbying some schemes for taxes o algo
>>225539822thank you for posting in my thread. that may be a part of it. not sure
>>225537727>implying the SF technocrats want anything to do with Oakland
>>225539943I asked my chatgpt about this and it told me about the history of NYC, with the 1890s vote to incorporate the 5 boroughs into the city we know today. The vote across NYC's 5 boroughs to dismantle their local governments in favor of one city-wide administration happened in 1894 and only passed with 277 votes. This was an INCREDIBLY slim margin. The vote passed by 50.11%! Just 0.11% majority that created the city of NYC as we know it today. Like you are saying one main concern of Brooklyn's residents was that they didn't want some big wig from Manhattan writing laws for them. But nowadays that suggestion would be ridiculous, because residents of Brooklyn are just as much new yorkers as residents of Manhattan. There is no real political / identity divide between the two boroughs Right now, residents of SF may not want the burden of paying to fix Oakland. Residents of Oakland may not want to be governed over by politicians in SF. But 20 or 30 years after the cities combine I doubt either party would even recognize a difference
too much sodomy
>>225540483not relevant in the slightest also not even true btw. SF hasn't been known for the castro for at least 2-3 decades. it's just not a significant part of SF culture anymore
Short answer: Your ancestors, the Spanish conquistadors, did it that way. The current 9 Bay Area counties roughly line up with the property divisions of the original Spanish landlords who purchased property titles from the Spanish Crown. The American conquest of California was very different than the conquest of Texas, over here Captain Fremont arrived in the state capitol, Monterey, and the Spanish Governor surrendered basically immediately and was then put in charge of security of killing all the bandits (big problem in what is now the hills above San Jose) and suppressing pro-Mexican forces in what is now Los Angeles who were all killed or raped. The Norcal Spanish landlords then created the California Republican Party with the white Anglos, and then the gold rush happened, and both of them decided to enter the United States as a single entity. California's capitol was Sacramento by now and the state's first railroad was conceived between Sacramento and Oakland by way of Padre aka Niles Canyon. The California Republican Party would run California as a one party state until the twentieth century, and remained a relevant political force until Arnold left office in 2010.

>>225543783To put it in simpler terms, in 1820 when California was still a Mexican province almost all of the human habitation was between Monterey (one r, not two) and Yerba Buena (San Francisco) along El Camino Real. All of the adjacent lands were legally owned property and not just crown land. The same for Los Angeles and San Diego, but only coastal areas as the Spanish then Mexican government's power was through it's navy. This fact also crippled the provincial government, as bandits frequently hid in the hills above Santa Clara, San Benito and Los Angeles where they would raid small homesteads and steal cattle from larger ones. This was a frequent problem, and both Madrid and Mexico city could not conscript enough soldiers to do the work .. especially when cattle theft was very profitable so soldiers sent would just quit and become cowboys. Local indians generally didn't like the Spanish either but they all got sick and died or were forcibly enslaved and bred into hispanics (you). This created a situation where all the wealth, roads, military etc were confined to a few low lying areas. In the Bay Area, this ultimately evolved into the 9 counties. Then Americans came and created a completely new axis of development, starting inland, spreading down from Donner Pass into the small community of Sacramento. This is where the famed El Dorado was, the river of gold behind my parents house. American land surveys recognized Spanish landlord holdings if they weren't stolen property. The Spanish landlords all opposed slavery, because they didn't like black people, leading to the territory banning black people from entering thereby prohibiting Southern economic expansion in the LA area. Down south US land surveys were done regardless, creating massive blocs and tracts out of the vacant unclaimed land. Subsquently this is why the Bay Area and Norcal has weird borders along rivers and not straight lines as LA does.
>>225543801SF has a pretty nice skyline imo
>>225543970Then the US Government then commissioned a railroad to be built from Chicago to Sacramento, the American Transcontinental Railroad and Telegraph. This was done through Land Grants based on the above surveys. This was when the Civil War happened and California, being a free state, was part of the reason the south could never have a western port or meaningful relations with Mexico. Later after the war, the Land Grant system was very corrupt and abused by President Grant and led to Texas Democrats creating the State Rail Commission and requiring all railroads operating in Texas to have a Texas office and base of operations. This was in stark contrast to the huge monopoly based out of 1 Market Street in San Francisco, the Southern Pacific Railroad which collected more in fees than the California state government in taxes and was the government in many places. It's CEO would later become California's Senator and help create corporate personhood, which persists to this day and is why Maduro was arrested for murdering the private oil company Exxon had set up in his nation. SP and it's friend Bechtel Engineering also helped create our immigration laws during this time, causing mass immigration of Filipinos and Chinese into California, and is the reason why the Hart Celler Act was passed in Washington. There is significantly more to this but it's all mexican history and mexicans are dirty.
>>225537727because it's full of a bunch of nerdy losers who pretend to be cool
In more recent times, since 1900, SF was never consolidated because the 8 other kingdoms in the region don't want SF's corrosive politics destroying them. SF has a bad reputation and prior to 1920, everything outside SF was farmland that didn't matter. The Bay Area as a region didn't fully develop into a true metropolis until Silicon Valley got a lot of money in the later 1970s, when San Jose evolved into a true urban city and Santa Clara was completely paved over in housing. There are no more orchards. LA was built from the same material but, by contrast, LA was litterally the only city in the region with no meaningful towns outside until 1930ish by which point LA could offer a better deal - centralized water, power and phone service mainly. SF and the Bay Area don't have centralized water distribution, at least not in the same way LA does with the Colorado River, especially nowadays with the movement to dismantle the entire Hetch Hetchy reservoir. And since 2000 everyone hates SF for being the Willie Brown Money Machine, everything Willie Brown touches turns to shit, including the hotel deals Trump made with him.
>>225539943This. SF, Marin, and South Bay suburbs actively want to keep people from the East Bay away as much as possible.
