Because in the American monocolture it was designated as the example of failure. Americans for some reason always forget that their actions caused it. It's same as in American culutre Italy is reduced as "me Nona didn't ccok like that" and Germany is reduced to "le nazis" But for some reason Americans always see themselves as a force of nature or just a neutral observer.
