>Translation Slop challenge: A Reassuring Message in a Swedish Winter Town

Translate the following twelve sentences into your target language:
>Beginner
The snow falls.
I see a sign.
The sign helps me.
>Easy
The town is cold, and the streets are white.
A woman reads the message and smiles.
“Are you safe?” a man asks.
>Medium
Near the town square, I find a small note that says everyone can find help at the library.
Although the snow covers the roads, the warm light in the windows makes the town feel less lonely.
Who left this message here, and why does it tell strangers that they are not alone?
>Hard
By the time I reach the old wooden noticeboard, the snow has nearly hidden the earlier announcements, yet one fresh sheet remains visible beneath a clear plastic cover: “If you need somewhere warm tonight, knock on the blue door beside the church.”
“I thought nobody would come,” the elderly shopkeeper says, pausing as she hands me a cup of tea; “but people have been leaving food, blankets, and notes of encouragement here since the first heavy snowfall.”
What reassures me most is not simply that the message promises help, but that someone has taken the time to write it in several languages, as if the stranger who might read it tomorrow deserves the same welcome as the person standing here tonight.
>>
>Output Slop Challenge: Seeing a Reassuring Message in a Swedish Winter Town edition lmaoooo

>Respond to the following prompts to the best of your ability. If you can, try using no external resources at first, leaving blanks or (even better) substituting descriptions or approximations for terms that you don't now. Then you may return to your answers and make better versions where you correct mistakes and substitute missing vocabulary. If you are more advanced, feel free to elaborate, expound, and improvise beyond the basic response.

Describe a Swedish town in winter. What do you see, hear, and feel?
You find a message on a sign near the town square. What does it say, and how do you react?
Describe the person who left the message. Why do you think they wrote it?
You feel cold and a little lost, but the message tells you where to find help. What do you do next?
You meet a local person who asks whether you have seen the message. What do you say to them, and how do they respond?
Imagine you want to leave a reassuring message for another stranger who visits the town tomorrow. What would you write, and where would you leave it?

I'm learning Portuguese even though I live in rural West Virginia and will never meet a Portuguese speaker.

I just really like the way the language sounds and looks.

Idk if ive asked this question before but, how much time do you dedicate to language learning per day or per week so that it doesnt take too much time away from other things youre interested in or that you think you should learn?
>>

I listen to short podcasts in my TL while on the train, and do my anki reviews.
In the evening, I do maximum 2h input, usually more like 1h, sometimes if I'm too busy then I don't do any. I think it probably averages 1h.

Very based, interest should come first. I mean does it matter if you actually encounter people who speak the language? Your by far most likely encounter is with people speaking Spanish and they're America so they should speak Murican damn it!
>>225657180
I do like 80-90% of my media consumption in TL, that's a lot of hours basically for free. Then I just do a few hours of grammar practice, creative writing etc per week which is quite manageable.
>>
>>225657591
>. I mean does it matter if you actually encounter people who speak the language?

Probably not, to be honest. I work from home doing computer nerd stuff and rarely leave my house. Even if there was a robust Lusophone community near me, I'm too assburger to go out and interact with them. I can probably just find a telegram or discord server full of tugas and huehues to chat with when I'm better at the language.

Usually a few hours playing Skyrim in German everyday unless I have something on, but I’m a NEET, and except Sunday because of church.
I might have jumped the gun. I nearly 100%ed Skyrim in Spanish (except Hearthfire) and it was easy to pick up nearly everything provided there were subtitles because I spent years intensively learning Spanish and it was an easier language, but German…let’s just say it’s better than you read at least one good grammar book (tick) AND a book that is diverse in vocabulary and semantics (no tick)
I might also use TLang-related YouTube and other websites, mainly news, on a whim, but with no regularity.
YouTube AI dubbing can be useful… or not. Subtitles are usually more reliable, but they don’t catch everything.
I occasionally speak to people in Spanish to keep it up to speed.

Finnish doesn't have a single word for "no". Instead, there is the negative verb, which is conjugated according to person and number, often followed by a non-declined verb. How cool is that?!

Wrong. If someone asked you if you want something, you answer "en", not "ei". "Ei" is "it/he/she isn't".

>Myжщинa
"Myжчинa". Typo?
>нaпиcaннo
"Haпиcaнo", one "н" here.
>в библиoтeкe вceх пoмoгyт.
"вceм пoмoгyт", wrong case
>и пoчeмy в нём cкaзaнo чyжaм
Did you go for "чyжaкaм" here?
>пocлeдниe oбъявлeния пoчти нe пoкpыты cнeгoм
Completely opposite meaning from the example. "пpeжниe oбъявлeния пoчти пoлнocтью cкpыты пoд cнeгoм" is roughly what you'd want here.
>нo oднa cтpaницa eщё виднa, пoкpытa плacтикoвым лиcтoм.
Sheet would translate to "лиcт" here, as in "лиcт бyмaги", which would then alter "плacтикoвым лиcтoм" to "плacтикoвым cлoeм" or "cлoeм плacтикa" for a more natural reading. "нo oдин лиcт eщё видeн, пoкpытый cлoeм плacтикa".
>cтyкнитe в cинюю двepь, pядoм c цepкoвю.
Usually when talking about knocking on the door, we would use "пocтyчaть" (or "пocтyчитe" here). "Cтyкнитe" isn't a mistake, people use that too, but just something to be aware of. I assume "цepкoвю" is another typo, "цepкoвью" would be correct.
>люди cюдa ocтaвляли eдy, oдeялa, и зaпиcки пooщpeния.
Not "cюдa" but "здecь"
>нaпиcaть eгo в paзных языкaх
"нa paзных языкaх"
> кaк бyдтo чyжoгo, кoтopый, мoжeт быть, зaвтpa eгo пpoчитaeт, зacлyживaeт тo жe пpивeтcтвиe, кaк и чeлoвeкa, ктo здecь cтoит этoй нoчью.
Cases got all wrong, nominative for nouns here. I'd personally use "нeизвecтный" instead of "чyжoй/чyжaк". "чeлoвeк, кoтopый здecь cтoит" instead. "Welcome" I think would rather be "пpиём\гocтeпpиимcтвo" as we're talking about hospitality, but could go either way.
>>
>>225663950
That's what I'm saying, if you can say it as I don't then you don't use ei. But ei itself is the Finnish no
>>
>>225666118
>Completely opposite meaning from the example.
I thought you had to use the negative when talking about something that almost happened? "I almost missed the bus" or something like that

>Cases got all wrong
I used the genitive/animate accusative for чyжoгo and чeлoвeкa because it's the object of зacлyживaть. Can you expand a bit on why that's wrong?

Thanks for all the feedback
>>
>>225666480
>I thought you had to use the negative when talking about something that almost happened?
Oh, I know what you're talking about, you'd need a different construct for that. Like "I almost missed the bus" would go "Я чyть нe oпoздaл нa aвтoбyc". So if you wanted to use that, it'd be "пpeжниe oбъявлeния чyть ли нe пoлнocтью cкpыты пoд cнeгoм". It's not mandatory, just one of the ways to express that.
>it's the object of зacлyживaть.
Bro it's the subject here, object is "пpивeтcтвиe" in this.

>>
>>225667833
more tones and more monosyllabic words so you have less room for error, weirder grammar with more particles among other unpleasant stuff and the written "standards" are extremely messed up with there being way more character variants, if any, for even the most common words
written cantonese is mostly fine with it alternating between lexical loans from mandarin, traditional yue characters and more modern phonetic characters (afaik) but southern min is a mess with half of the words not even having properly attested forms, like ê, the equivalent of 的 (etym. unrelated) being either ê (most common), 的 (MOE standard), 个 (folk standard), ㄟ, 兮, etc. because the proper character isn't known (derives from OC 其 but not written as such), similar situation for a good 30%-50% of the vocab, so hokkien text ends up being mostly mixed script with romanisation filling character gaps, probably thanks to min splitting off before MC or atleast during early MC unlike other varieties
also from what i've seen written cantonese also likes to randomly code switch into hong kong written chinese aka mandarin due to the diglossia there
so even if we don't take into account the insane difference in learning resources, yue and min just end up being way more unforgiving than mandarin, wu is probably similar but i don't know enough about it and it seems too dead to matter sadly

there are lots of people in scotland and ireland learning them. the number of people who can speak them has been going up for years and is the highest its been in decades. in the case of scottish gaelic it also has a real native speaker base and is spoken locally in some places - you can go ot the hebrides and talk to people without big issue

as for why its already americans 90% of the people interested in them are interested because of the folk music and american traditional music basically is just a branch from irish/scottish gaelic trad music they're very similar some american songs still even have irish lyrics and verses

Um, not really... you don't seem to have a good understanding of this. It's a verb that must be conjugated, and no form of it is a direct translation of "no" as a result. If someone asks "haluatko tavata kahvilassa" you can't answer "ei" like you would answer "no" to "do you want to meet at the coffeehouse". "Ei" means "it isn't/wasn't/doesn't/didn't", not "no".

Bro believe me, pay for a teacher for solo or group classes. Not only is someone going to correct you instantly and review your progress but as you watch your bank account money disappearing you are going to get motivated not to waste the money. Being 100% self taught is not most optimal road for everyone and being kind of forced to show up can offset lack of motivation very easily. It's never too lat in a year you can get to upper B1.

there's a whole lot of 'whys' that i think contribute to the lack of one. what i'm about to say is of course not exclusive to russia, obviously; but the established businessmen and senior government officials who've vested business interests on the state level are so entrenched into the roots of the government in the upper echelons that figures who would upend their finances are sanitarily disposed of via open windows or are arrested or charged with political crimes and removed from the public eye. that's more of an oligarchy veiled behind a right wing government rather than a right wing party that's moved beyond making a cabal of state owned oil businesses lods of emone
>>

>there's a whole lot of 'whys' that i think contribute to the lack of one
same thing as communists explaining why communism didn't work (but it will this time!)
>>
>>225689010

>>
>>225705891
Alright, but even 50-60 years ago the most liberal western countries were extremely conservative. Sexual promiscuity was forbidden, xenophobia and racism were encouraged, lgbt was banned, women were meant to veil themselves like muslims before ww2 even in europe's most liberal societies, immigration was not a thing, people were expected to have large families. Liberalism is something that started with the boomer generation. And in that time period it's very clear white people and european civilization are no longer going to exist in the future. China eclipsed the USA and the world is reverting back to a chud planet, with the yellows being the new rulers.
>>
>>225705891
>before the meaningful distinction of left-wing and right-wing was right-wing, actually (please ignore that christianity directly brought its downfall)
the distinction between "right wing" and "left wing" is very simple and can be applied to any period of time
the christian empire continued for a thousand years after essentially so i don't see your point

if you have an enemy, you kill him, that's "the right wing" way of doing things

if you have an enemy, you let him inside your home and take everything to not appear intolerant/colonizer/racist/etc. , you only ever attack your own people who try to do something about the enemy (the fascists). that's the left wing way

as far as i can tell no ancient civilization let the enemy invade them from the outside and the inside because of humanism/liberalism/progressivism, so they were all right wing

even so the attempt of turning left wing and right into universal political groups is another progressive/marxist invention because of their dialectic materialism nonsense. they need to create a narrative of two opposites and see them everywhere. but for the sake of the argument that was done
>>
>>225706441
>>225706461
those things are right-wing in the sense that they happened in the past, and that's it, in their time they viewed themselves as left-wing and progressive
>>
>>225706133

Lliberalism/left wing is something that started in 1960, but conservatism/right wing started during the Greek/Roman/whatever ancient empire. Clearly.
>>
>>225706521
That makes no sense. It's objective extreme far right. I don't know why people in Canada are so retarded anyways. Big news:
I am dropping Hebrew and resuming Japanese.
I gave Hebrew 1.5 months and made good progress, but I just don't care for it. My motivation was to read the Tanakh in its original language, but that's really a limited textual corpus unless I wanted to read Talmudic literature as well, which I don't. My Japanese is at least at the level where I can progress by using graded readers and Anki almost exclusively. I've also determined that Latin, Ancient Greek, and Japanese are the perfect set of TLs morally, linguistically, and spiritually.
>>
>>225707531

wouldn't it be written in aramaic? unless the surrounding literature was in biblical hebrew, i don't recall
not like biblical hebrew - aramaic is a huge jump anyways, it's like the distance between portuguese and spanish

>>225707673
The Talmud is Hebrew and Aramaic. Hebrew continued to be used as a language of scholarship until the Middle Ages. I called this scholarship Talmudic literature collectively, but I don't think that's accurate

Liberalism entered the public arena of politics in the ‘Enlightenment’ just prior to, leading up to, and causing the French Revolution.
Liberal - originally meaning having the virtue of being generous - became corrupted to mean morally lax i.e. libertine. and that freedom - the ability to choose the good (Saint Thomas Aquinas) as taught by the Church - became the license to do whatever one pleases so long as it doesn’t interfere with someone else doing whatever he pleases. The United States as a sovereign state has had this philosophy as its guiding principle since its inception and has spread it throughout the world under the guise of liberal democracy.
I say it has entered the public arena in the 1700s because its machinations have been kept hidden for many, many years earlier in occult secret societies who swear their oaths to Lucifer, the (false) light bringer.
