So, here's a summary on わけ, one of the words that makes students want to slit their throats in frustration. Hopefully I haven't missed any cases (hehe, cases/わけ)>わけではない: 別にあなたのために弁当余分に作ったわけじゃないわ->It's not like I made an extra portion for you or anything (you b-baka)>わけにはいかない: 負けるわけにはいかない!->I can't afford to lose!/I can't lose!explanatory sentence + second sentence with わけ. このネックレス、ダイアモンドじゃん! 高いわけだね->This necklace has diamonds in it. No wonder it's expensive!>わけで (giving reasons. also see 次第で) 会議が想定より早く終わったわけで電話しようかなと思った->The conference ended sooner than expected, so I thought I'd call (you)>わけがない: 勝てるわけがない!->There's no way we can win!>わけがある: そいつの敵対的な態度には訳がある->There's a reason why he's so hostile (more literally, there is a reason for his hostile attitude)>わけか? (to confirm the speaker's message) A: なるほど、会議が来週に延期されたわけか?->I see, so the meeting was pushed back to next week>つまり... わけ(in other words): A: 先生は追試は再来週って言ってた。 B: つまり、落ちたわけだね。->A: There's a make-up exam 2 weeks from now. B: So, in other words, you flunked the examI've always felt saddened that no one has ever made lists of cases/templates like these. It really helps summarize the ways to interpret these wordsPS: わけ gets lost in translation so often it makes you want to hang yourself

i'm beginning to understand a lot of dialogue even though i'm not progressing particularly hard and i still use english subsnot really sure how to /immerse/, probably need to watch shit i dont care about actually understanding
>>225818215Some things you can do>try to detect cliche structures (そういうつもりはなかった->I didn't mean it that way, ヒーロ気取りか?->are we playing hero now? (X気取り), etc.)>pay attention to onomatopoeic and mimetic words (しゅるしゅる, しゅわしゅわ, じゃりじゃり, ふわっと, etc.). you are gonna have to force yourself to incorporate those into your vocabulary>write a bucket list of hard to understand/use stuff, like how they tack on modified nouns at the end of sentences, something that doesn't really exist in English (would be redundant to say stuff like 電車が遅れる模様です... you'd just say "the train seems to be running late" (no signs of 模様))>add notes to words (e.g. formal, humorous, technical term, used when disparaging someone, said ironically, only applies used to refer to oneself, disparaging, shows contempt, compliment, self-deprecating). flashcards from premade decks often lack this info. the kind you'd scribble in class on your notebook
>>225818646i'm actually fairly good at picking those up i think ill skip it i just want to /immerse/ like i did with english
>>225818714If you want to pick up words like natives, it's as simple as watching/reading and trying to guess what a person means (not just what they said) and why they used those words, with the occasional dictionary lookup.Your biggest obstacle is gonna be the 使い分け(differences in usage) that need to be explained by someone who knows the language. If the going gets too tough, you might think of writing down the things you don't understand and leaving them for later. It's better to leave a hole than just give up

>>225819458>like every other languageExcept it's tougher with Japanese because you'll encounter difficulty navigating through the way some concepts are rendered, like the くらい/ほど/程度/だけ group. And you have tons of words for the same thing, like 年寄, 年配者, 高齢者, etc.Like, imagine stuff like べく vs ために. Both will yield "in order to" as a translation, but the usage varies greatly (former implies a strong desire to to it on the part of the speaker). Also, からには vs 手前 (former expresses you're doing it out of a sense of duty/with conviction, the latter implies like you're doing it to avoid losing face (because you promised it, you made a public declaration))

Did you know that when you experience a pleasant feeling, if you approve, welcome, and keep clinging to it, the underlying tendency to greed underlies that? And that when you experience a painful feeling, if you sorrow and wail and lament, beating your breast and falling into confusion, the underlying tendency to aversion underlies that?
Did you know that without giving up the underlying tendency to greed for pleasant feeling, without dispelling the underlying tendency to aversion toward painful feeling, without eradicating ignorance in the case of neutral feeling, without giving up ignorance and without giving rise to knowledge, it is quite impossible to make an end of suffering in this very life?
