why doesnt europe take care of their historical places?
>>

They built like a billion castles and they're pointless now and expensive to maintain. Might as well just take care of the nicer ones.

Those castles were picked apart for stone to build churches o algo hundreds of years ago. It's a lot easier than quarrying new stones.

This and it isn't even some new trend. The former noble family which ruled the territory I now live in sold their first castle to an abbey in the early 12 century, which then proceeded to dismantle it in order to get building material for their expansion. The nobles on the other hand built a new castle in a different location.

Who would look at this picture and not immediately find the left one more inviting as a place to hang out and enjoy the place, maybe think about history.

wdym pic left looks like it's being taken care of, i.e. being maintained in its original ruined condition. what you wanna put a fast food joint on there? just put it anywhere else.
>>225975589
yeah, the ruined ones still draw enough visitors or hikers, and if nothing else they provide some scenery overlooking a town from a hill.
most are probably protected by Denkmalschutz (historic monument preservation) so may only be maintained in their current state, not built up anew.
been to a nearby Burg that had some work done on it for a few years. think they restored some wooden floors and the wooden clocktower, but left the stone walls untouched. and they even have a germslop restaurant on site and a parking lot a short walk down the hill, so it's burger-ready, do visit. if necessary we can arrange for mobile scooters to cover the pesky walkway.

Is White Castle actually good? The idea of a burger boiled in onions sounds revolting
>>
A castle about 100 km where I lived was recently sold for about 12 million, now restoring it is going to be fun part.
>>
some ruins are more beautiful than their potential restored version

one was build to collect taxes and protect its citizen and the other was build to sell crap to its citizen and slowly kill them.

Castles failed most if the time at their task, when huge castles and monuments collapsed or parts of them were due to extreme weather or earthquakes their stones were used to build mew buildings that were not necessarily from their century, it's been a thing across Europe since the Roman times, you can even see buildings that were made of 3 or 5 different and distant centuries architectures and materials.
In addition to the central town houses having private access hidden underground sites like ancient Roman water collectors, necropoli, temples and theaters.

Fortresses are built on scrapy and hard to reach places, making it a pain to preserve
