Catholic anons of /int/, how can you continue to be Catholic after learning of the Catholic church's persectution of Galileo simply for positing the long-since scientifically accepted idea that the Earth orbits the sun? The Catholic Church's justification for persecuting Galileo was that heliocentrism contradicts the Bible, so isn't that proof that the Bible is wrong given that the Earth does in fact orbit the sun?
>>225986777>Catholic Church's justification for persecuting Galileo was that heliocentrism contradicts the BibleHeliocentrism was already a popular concept in the church due to Coppernicus and it didnt become controversial until Galileo started linking Heliocentrism to a literalist interpretation of the Bible going around which itself was controversial then Galileo came along and linked his research with his own denial of the Trinity which is where the concept of the catholic church being anti science comes from since most people only know about pop history myths from the time period
>>225986900>then Galileo came along*Isaac Newton not Galileo came along and denied the trinity
>>225986900So why didn't the Catholic church ban Biblical literalism, instead of Heliocentrism/Copernicanism?
>>225986996The literalist fags won the argument for awhile because of etc church corruption pretty much
why did Muhammad rape a 9 year old?
>>225988031He is an evil paedophile.>>225987942How does that impact apostolic succession? Do Catholics believe corrupt and Bishops still have apostolic succession?
>>225986777Being religious while reading history and theology is mostly cognitive dissonance endurance test
>>225988446>Do Catholics believe corrupt and Bishops still have apostolic succession?Yes, I mean there is no such thing as a man who is not corrupt. We are all sinners thats kind of a big point of christian theology generally not even just catholic
>>225989877Of what use is apostolic succession, if a bishop who has it is just as corrupt as a bishop who doesn't?
>>225990488Apostolic succession is about maintaining the hierarchy of the church which is supposed to something theologically sound beyond the flaws of individual bishops and not something unique to catholics as other sects also practice apostolic succession following the same logic basically
>>225986777By looking at protestant countries.
>>225986777There were valid problems with Heliocentricism from a purely observational standpoint. It's only when you consider the odd (from Earth's perspective) orbits of Mercury and Venus that Geocentricism becomes questionable.Galileo was right, but his argument was poor.
>>225986777i am not even catholic but this is weak arguementationGalileo was not the first to posit the idea, Copernicus also posited the same idea and no one thought it was hereticalAlso the catholics were following the model from Aristotle, not the Bible, and Gallileos theories contradicted many existing theories on physics that only got disproven years later by Newton>>225989260religious people and schizos are usually the only ones studying this stuff, atheists are usually busy gooning and smoking weed
>>225986777>Catholic church's persectution of Galileo simply for positing the long-since scientifically accepted idea that the Earth orbits the sun? This never happened. Heliocentrism was already mainstream in the West due to Copernicus, who was a catholic cleric. The Catholic church, and Christianity as a whole, has never been as anti-science as the mainstream media likes to portray it as.
>being catholic>caring about the biblelol. lmao even. never read that thing it's for protestant heathens
>>225992852funnily enoigh the catholic church was the instutional scienceif this happened today all of the trust the science redditors would want to see galilleo burned at the stake for denying the hecking experts
>>225992141The Apostolic successors decreed that heliocentrism was a heresy, but it turned out to be true. So where does that leave Christianity?
>>225995748>but it turned out to be trueYes. Which the church also agreed on? Its a theory that started within it ffs>where does that leave christianity Christianity isnt contingent on the catholic church (unless youre catholic) so idk man like i said apostolic succession isnt really invalidated by the flaws of various men

>>225992905Its odd how those hard leanings towaeds orthodoxy within the sciences still exists outside the church desu. Germ Theory also had a reallt flight start in the 19th century not because of any church influence but just due to the attitude of the miasma theory fags towards new evidence
>>225986900Interdasting. Post other examples like this.
>>225986777The same thing happens in the Philippines. Evolution is a taboo topic and talking about tectonic plates is worse than getting caught with a gram of weed here.
>>225986777i dont necessarily believe in the dogmas of the catholic church, but i think that they have been the church that has stayed the most morally consistent. You may disagree with them but they have always opposed fascism, abortion, euthanasia, racism, so that is it. The catholic church is a lighthouse in a sea of protestant moral corruption. Even if God doesnt exist, the catholic church is the one true church established by Jesus and the pope is the legitimate sucessor of st peter.
>>225997153>always opposed fascism>always opposed racism Dont look into the Spanish Civil War or Mussolini my dude.
>>225997237?Mussolini's attacks on Christianity are well known.
>>225997237I dont think they ever endorsed mussolini? i think they got the vatican land area from him but that is it. The spanish civil war idk, ive heard that the leftists were burning/ desecrating churches or something like that and maybe that is why they felt like supporting franco was the only choice, but either way the catholic church has always been pro life, in all of its forms, whereas the theories of protestantism have been used to justify racism and protestants voted more for hitler than catholics, as a proportion, and i dont really agree with everything they say but i think they established the university system and its basically a protestant psyop that they always bring up galileo's house arrest and never once mention the horrible things luther did and said. Including saying that they should kill jews.
>>225997287>>225997291Early on on Mussolini's career the Catholic Church endorsed Mussolini up until the early 30's after the totalitarian state started interfering too much into church and the Catholic Church supported the Nationalists including the Falangists, Francoists and Carlists. Not to mentioned other right authoritarian movements like Salazar in Portugal. Again, the church would later decry fascism but to say it always opposed it kind of misses the historical reality
>>225992584This is not even superficially true
