I've been all over the poorer parts of Europe from 2014-2022 doing diginomad and my favorites were Serbia and Croatia. For vacationing I would probably say Croatia but for living Serbia or Bulgaria because it's cheap living, extremely safe, and the people are super friendly. Slovakia is also very nice but is not cheap. Russians and Ukranians as and Poor in my experience were much more impenetrable and guarded as people, and Ukraine/Russia especially will make you feel like an outsider.
>>
>>226006394
did you experience any cultural shock?
>>
>>226007103
In Russia and Ukraine yes, I didn't expect them to be so inwards, kind of like Finns. Also some of the service workers in the country seem like they are downright rude, but I noticed that after going to the same store for 2 months straight that they cashier ladies started to be nicer to me. I was also shocked that particularly in Moscow people were actually interested in talking about life in America and they have a romantic view of what life in the US is like (if only they knew lmfao).

As for the Balkans the only thing that shocked me is the dog shit on the streets and the amount of graffiti. You guys really need to fucking so something about that. I didn't experience any other culture shock in the Balkans honestly it's not too different than Italy. If I had to choose something, it's that people in Serbia and Croatia (little less so in Bulgaria) know almost perfect English. I didn't have to learn more than a few words, and even in smaller towns this was the case. I was told it's because nothing is localized in their language, but it has to be something deeper than that.

I'll ignore mine and look at Slavic post-Soviet eastern European countries, it's personally a tough choice between Poland or Russia.
Poland is doing well for a post-Soviet eastern European country.

We are taught English in schools so everyone can at least string up a sentence or two but in general the world is globalized.
Russians and Ukrainians have (had) 200 mil people combined and add Russian-speaking CIS countries you get to a lot more people.
Their information sphere is just bigger and they are their own thing.
>As for the Balkans the only thing that shocked me is the dog shit
Stray dogs need to be killed and eradicated, but animal rights activists are morons. They should be eradicated along with the strays. (I love animals, but that doesn't mean I have to tolerate stray dogs on the street).
>the amount of graffiti.
After the elections got won a lot of euphoria went to this and people are starting to do art all over.
People think this is a globohomo CIA op because apparently our nationalism and strength (that barely exist) is held up by some graffiti.
Yes it is a problem but I think it's because of mafia/hooligan scene. Even I made graffiti as a child for fun and I was a normal, well behaving kid.

In my defense we did it on pavements and it got washed away in 3 days.

Our civilization (or our attempt at it) does not exist for stray dogs but for it's people.
Let's say you were living in a suburb and had a child, would you love that 5 strays gnawed at you while you were strolling?
But this will never get solved because modern people are morons who just half ass everything and do not stand for anything concrete.

Unless there's weaponized pack dogs carrying ebola this shit will just get ignored because as long as the house is not burning we shouldn't do anything radical.
>>
>>226012010
If our civilization exists for its people why has every iteration of it had a majority class in poverty?
Is that who it's for if half the population gets treated about as well as said stray dogs? And what would you gain by killing them all? Rather, what is the measure of a civilization whose answer to the bottom rung of life is execution rather than care?
If you were born 120 years ago, do you think an austro-hungarian royal would see you closer to him or the stray dog?
Have some thought for the way you react to the world around you, it reacts to you in turn. Perhaps it will illuminate you as to why you live in a shithole.
Regardless your statement has nothing to do with love, owning your doublethink does not relieve you of the consequences.

They view the US as a place where anything is possible and everyone is rich and black people are like quirky hip hop people instead of a literal plague. They all see the US through the lens of 80s and 90s movies and I never once got hate for being an American.

One of the funniest experience I had was in Serbia when I spoke to an old man in the park
>Old man asks "are the Indians still a problem?"
>Years ago before Jeet invasion, so I told him no
>realize he is literally talking about Native Americans from cowboy movies

>>226010581
Mostly in Belgrade, but I went to Western Serbia to Valjevo and a small town called Ljubovija. I was still able to get around with English there but it was more limited. Still eveyrone under 30 knew English. In Croatia I stayed in Zagreb and I only spent about a month there.

Do you think my state has limitless resources to throw away to STRAY DOGS of all things?
If you gave me time I could name hundred other things.
>Is that who it's for if half the population gets treated about as well as said stray dogs
Moving the goalposts. Entirely different issue. Might as well open a pandora's box and talk to me about how evil occurs or the relationship of church and state.

Of all the things that are not well in this country, I don't see how wasting resources on stray dogs would be a good step forward.
>inb4 it's the general mentality and approach that count
No, don't think so.

By the way. You don't know who you are talking to and who's writing things behind the keyboard. Let's say I worked a very taxing and humane job for a year. I don't want to say anything specific though, because I don't feel obliged to.
Again and again you have personally attacked my country and my society so I don't feel like I owe you nothing.
If you were such an enlightened person from a high society, you would understand that throwing such a remark (especially Serbs known for massive contrarianism) would only provoke a counter-reaction in most of us.
Yet you talk to me, which makes me think we are not here to talk, you are just here to confirm your preconceived notions about Serbia and jerk yourself off.
And considering your anger at my opinion about stray dogs and your defense of stray dogs, to you a stray dog is above me.
I personally do not think my country is full of dumb and immoral people because I keep talking to non-Serbs again and again and I have never found this supposed wisdom that exists in you.

Also my country cares more about poor people and people in need than Yugoslavia did (way more) but it's okay Reddit said Serbia bad so it must be full of spear-chucking stone age retards who do not have any decentralised institutions and municipalities that divert resources themselves independent of Belgrade because whatever reason.
Yugoslavia famously did not care about environment, invalids, autists one single fucking bit because look at any post-Yugo infrastructure genius and look how it was never designed for anybody that doesn't have 2 legs and look at their social care programs that many times simply locked the "undesirables" up. We are light years ahead of our past in this area.
Fucking hell, your precious stray dogs were shot and thrown into a truck.
That's a country we inherited and a country that was famously not led by Serbian chetniks.

Croatia is the clear winner (historical heritage, nature, climate, safety). But excluding Croatia, I would say the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Pooland. That said, I must admit that Russia intrigues me a great deal. It is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.

calm down dude. In Serbia they would always says "opushteno" to me, because I sound slightly anxious or not totally relaxed. You should take your own advice :3 I like your country and would readily visit again, so don't listen to overly-politicized people online.

It is normal to get heated up when you suffer a generalised attack on your identity, but in this case I also don't think what he said makes any sense.
