>>
>>226030537
the primary language currently used by most Ukrainians is Ukrainian. Which was historically part of a dialect continuum with russian - if you pick the standard forms of both they are clearly distinct, but also partially mutually intelligible, and this applies much more to informal local dialects. The russian empire and ussr made strides towards encouraging the population to switch to the standard variety of russian, and now the modern Ukrainian state has made efforts to get everyone to switch back to the standard variety of Ukrainian. So now the boundary between the languages is much clearer, But before centralized government intervention from either side there was more of a gradient in the language going west to east.

A war of self-defense is always just, so this isn’t a troll post.
How will Ukraine survive?
Its population has plummeted by 25%; it’s currently even harder hit demographically than South Korea; 70% of those who fled to Western Europe don’t want to return; the social consequences of the war are still impossible to estimate; and the cost of reconstruction will almost certainly run into the trillions.

There will never be a return to pre-war Ukraine. Realistically - what will Ukraine be like in 10 years?

During my lifetime, Ukraine will likely be the country that undergoes the most dramatic transformation.

Impossible to tell, but economy-wise, there industry is shifting to the west, so those regions are set for there future.

However, I just got back from a trip to Ukraine a couple of days ago and didn't happen even once, surprisingly enough. Maybe they're phasing out the practice. It's drawn a lot of criticisim for obvious reasons.

I collect administrative first-level subdivisions by bicycle. I want to complete all of Europe at some point. Ukraine was one of the few big regions left where I still needed to get a lot of subdivisions so I went there in 2023. I've got every Oblast in Ukraine that I can reasonably get right now, except for Zaporizhia Oblast (planned for next year). I don't think the military will let me cycle to Kramatorsk or Kherson.
I've been to Ukraine at least once every year since, and I've found another autistic reason besides subdivision collecting to travel the country by bicycle. Also I think supporting the Ukrainian economy with my unemployment gibs is a sensible thing to do.

Yes, very, but it depends a little. Hostels in the large cities start at like five Euros a night. You can get a 4* tier hotel room with breakfast for less than thirty Euros. Fast-food joints, bakeries, restaurants and most fruit and veggies are a lot cheaper too. Highly processed and packaged food is comparatively expensive.

That being sad, accomodation in small places along transit routes near the frontlines can be surprisingly expensive (by Ukrainian standards), because there's a lot of demand due to the military (who also get paid well by Ukrainian standards) but little supply.

I guess but that would be a lot more expensive and I doubt you'd ultimately save that much time, with getting to and from the airport. Not everyone lives in Frankfurt.

I always take German trains to Swinoujscie or Kostrzyn on the German border. From there there are direct trains taking you to all the way across Poland to Przemysl for like 25 Euros, including bicycle transport. An absolute steal.

Honestly, I fell absolutely zero confidence those troops will not be pulled back to guard the border with Hungary the moment russians launch a single FPV drone in their general vicinity.
>>
>>226038962
yes that is how I currently feel about the NATO troops here too. but as I said, given a decade or so of people getting used to the status quo it may become a more effective deterrent

I'm not big on either of them, it's Skoropadsky, Melnyk, Konovalets, and Shukhevych for me

Good country and people, we are scaling our trade and crossborder shipments with them, as well as military cooperation. This gets drowned in other news, but I think they are probably the most "steady" neighbor we have foreign policy wise
