Are they more like Germans, Italians or other Slavs?
>>
>>226030424
They are very north italian/german in terms of dilligency and tidiness, but slavic in being proficient at counting bloodcells
>>
>>226030534
>being proficient at counting bloodcells
what does that mean?
>>
>>226030570
Essentially detecting and shunning foreign nationalities. This requires an exceptional amount of skill in the Balkans because all the nations look, behave and sometimes even talk the same, but everyone passionately hates each other.

Come to think of it, they can also be very rude and obnoxious in foreign countries, but not all of them. Depends on what kind of Slovenian you run across. All in all, usually great guys.
>>
>>226030701
Will there every be TBL (total balkan love)?
>>
>>226030424
We are cultural mutts, there's no getting around it.
>>226030701
We have the same issue most Europeans have, a smug sense of superiority. Exceptionally absurd for a culture that has spent 1300 years losing but in truth it's a dumb attitude for anyone in Europe to have. We didn't do any of the shit our ancestors did, the good or the bad. We're just chuds, most of us descended from farmers or laborers, not that being descended from inbred royals is better.
It helps to have humility, especially when visiting other countries.
>>
>>226030736
Zoomers are already very cosmopolitan since they were born long after the war. Media consumption is very much intertwined between ex-yu countries. I find that a lot of zoomies can't sniff out nationalities that well, although neither did I when I was younger.

>>226030807
The usual comparison is looking at the Slovenia-Croatia border, especially in some places like the Kupa canyon. The Croatian bank has overgrown villages, zero economic activity and unmaintained weekend homes, while Slovenian has camps and tidy surroundings. Maybe it's not that important, but small things like that add up and are something to be proud of. In the end it doesn't matter because we'll both disappear within like 3 more generations or so and become a jeet or muslim colony, but still.
>>
>>226030424
They're ostensibly Germanic but when no one sees they eat cevap and listen to Dara Bubamara.
>>
Slovene work ethics combined with Croat pride, Bosnian cuisine, Serbian bravery and Macedonian...ugh...ajvar? - would make a superpower. So sad no one came up with an idea to combine them all into one country, it would be a guaranteed success.
>>
>>226030951
>but small things like that add up and are something to be proud of
Conscientiousness is an admirable trait I guess, we take care of our environment which I find is one of our primary cultural features so for tourists that's appealing.
Regardless I don't think being a decent gardener is grounds for a superiority complex. And I especially don't appreciate the ones clinging desperately to the idea that we're not Balkan when the whole government still runs like a Yugo mafia with a thin veneer of European oversight.
As for assimilation. We've held it back fairly well up until now but I'm not too invested either way. If the Slovenians of the future take issue with the status quo they can burn down parliament and make their future what they wish it to be and if the whole world gets set on fire and we're in a grand holobunga then assimilation won't really be the main issue anyway. I worry about making sure I can feed myself if the stores empty out, the cultural shit doesn't even register.

>According to the 2002 census, Slovenia's main ethnic group are Slovenes (83%). At least 13% of the population were immigrants from other parts of former Yugoslavia, primarily ethnic Bosniaks (Bosnian Muslims), Croats and Serbs and their descendants.[4] They have settled mainly in cities and suburbanised areas.[5]

There are no cities in Slovenia. Ljubljana is a medium sized town, at best. Whole country is a singular small rural province. It's nicer than Kosovo, sure, but people act like Slovenia is a smaller Netherlands or something. They're not some urban civilization, they're a relatively developed collection of villages.
>>
>>226031144
I'm not saying keeping yards tidy make a nation a chosen people, but whenever you do something well, it should be celebrated appropriately. Croats have such an inferiority complex that we desperately need to learn to pat ourselves on the back sometimes outside of football matches.

>>226033606
That's obviously great, but Slovenes still somehow do even more of that in the same space and the same amount of people.

and yet it beats everything Slovenia has to offer in this regard and per one restaurant with authentic Slovene cuisine you have 10 buregdzinicas and I'm talking about the centre of Ljubljana which is where tourists come and after which they judge your nation's cuisine.

why are threads about Slovenia always full of Croats voicing their [irrelevant] opinion on Slovenia?
>>
>>226030951
>especially in some places like the Kupa canyon.
the proper name for that river is K-O-L-P-A. Croat nationalism is obnoxioius, you even named the wiki page for the river Sotla, whose spring is in Slovenia the Croatian way, Sutla, and there was a theory on that page about the origin of the name of the river being the P-I-E root *su, despite Sotla being the original name of that river, as the Slovenes inhabited these lands long before the Croats moved to Zagreb and its environs from Dalmatia in the 16th century. Likewise, Kolpa (the Roman Colapis) is the proper name for the river 'Kupa'.
>>

tourists go to Slovenian tourist trap restaurants like Sokol, not to Bosnian street food holes in the wall.
>>

also, the Slovenes think that only disgusting sauerkraut sludge like jota is 'real' Slovenian cuisine, ignoring traditional Slovenian dishes like fried chicken, roast veal and pork shank. There even exists a native Slovenian equivalent of čevapi called odščipanci, which is pretty obscure.

Slovenes have more small family businesses in their villages. But then again once you cross the border to Slovenia it stops feeling like a real forested area and more like a park that's tamed by civilization. It might be because of higher population density and more settlements.

Croat is just a regional designatin, your true ethnic denomination is Serbo-Croat. You are the same ethnicity as a person from Niš, but you are not the same ethnicity as me. well, there is a story that before the marriage she had to spend some time in an abbey to learn Polish, which I believe wouldn't be a case if she spoke Slovene. So maybe you're right. But somehow the modern Slovenian state sees her as Slovene. Very interesting approach actually, how you managed to incorporate Germans into your history. no such people, you can describe the standard language with that term which itself is alien to most of Croatia but the truest form of Croatian is what's called "Chakavain" but it should just be called Croatian which in it's pure form stripped from roman borrowings is arguably closer to most Kajkavian dialects than Slovene is.

I mean, Yugoslavia based on democratic, capitalist principles would be still a good idea. I still can't get over the chance you had in 1980, going the Spanish way. You would be a regional superpower now with one of the biggest EU economies, one of the strongest armies and well, wide recognizability, you wouldn't hear the weird silence from a westerner when telling him where you are from.

And Slovenes would obviously dominate the whole country economically and intellectually. You could be a vice-CEO of an international bank headquartered in Belgrade for example.

you still have boomer manifestations for may 1st with the partisan hats and Yugo flags, but imo the last gasp of Yugonostalgia in mainstream culture was when the government denied the motion that a part of Slovenska cesta be renamed back to Titova cesta in 2011 iirc. The instigator of that motion was apparently Ljubljana mayor Zoran Janković (who I'm voting for in 10 days, he's a good mayor, big on ambitious construction projects) which is telling, since Serbs love authoritarianism.

>>
>>226038249
>we'd eventually lose our language and culture and assimilate among the Serbocroatians,

the boomers like my parents all used Serbocroatian phrases amid their Slovenian unless they were HC Catholics. The Slovenes and especially the Serbs & Bosnians are more dissimilar culturally than Catalans and Castillians are. I wouldn't really call us Slovenes South Europeans like those other nations are because this land has always been under NW European influence all until WWI and the introduction of Balkan culture only happened after WWII. It has been noted by anthropologists that the greatest cultural differences in Europe arise on a NW - SE axis and that is because of the Muslim influence on the Balkans.

the dark L (Slovenes are one of the few Slavic nations that don't palatalize our L's), and kind of talking at the back of your throat in a monotone, that is the typical Serbian accent. Also, not using the vocalic E and O, which sound like German vocalic E and O, and not reducing unstressed E's into schwa's. Serbocroatian has been influenced by Italian, Hungarian and Turkish, that's why it only has five vowel sounds, unlike most other Slavic languages.

I don't. I usually stay quiet but he keeps posting the same thing all the time using that "Serbo-Croat" term but then mentioning Serbs and Bosnians exclusively. Say something like "Serbo-Bosnian" then. It's funny because if he saw my last name he would place me deep inside Carniola and you as a Pole probably deep inside Bohemian lands.
And the way he describes Slovenia in the past is exactly how my grandparents described this area to me before Tito and before that in Austria-Hungary.

I live in a region where there are big monuments to partisans on every 5 km of county road, I grew up never being exposed to what everyone outside apparently associates with Croatia
Most people on the Thomson concert don't even live in Croatia and then larp as being patriotic. Idk I don't listen to him he sounds a bit too balkan for my taste but +90% of his music isn't "nationalistic", it's patriotic. He doesn't call for killing of non-Croats or conquering new lands, at least now but I wouldn't be surprised if he did during the war.

Međimurje and large parts of Zagorje and that north-western edge weren't. They were by pre-Ottoman Dalmatian Croats likely but not by later deep balkan populations. Later the modern city of Zagreb was formed around migrations from Zagorje and the north including the German speaking population of the empire.
People from Slovene lands also settled some regions of Croatia during the early modern era which you already know
Istria is a special case but the Kvarner area didn't see significant Serbian or Bosnian-like population settling down until the 20. century. Serbs were only known as traveling merchants from the east.

It's interesting that unlike the other Eastern European states, Yugoslavia exhibited an independentmindedness even before WWII, when the Serbian airforce carried out a coup against the PM for signing a pact with Germany, thus making YU into a German puppet state. This was followed by a German invasion and the start of the resistance immediately after. But even then, the Slovenes had our own resistance, the Osvobodilna Fronta composed of Slovene and using Slovene officially, just like Slovenia continued to do after the war.

Idk, I saw censuses from Rijeka before WWI and after WWII.
Before the Great War Slovenes made up a double digit percentage of Rijeka town if I remember correctly.
Of course no one called it "Rijeka" then, it was Fiume by Italians and Hungarians and Reka by both Croats and Slovenes with Croats towards Bakar saying "Rika".
Also the census reported more English than Serbs lol which in the present sounds absurd
After WWII when Italians had to leave we get a very different picture and Slovenes also become a very insignificant minority.
>>
>>226040269

totally forgot about that, they actually believe that we committed genocide against them. Or they don't believe it, but they see an easy way of smearing our reputation by conflating us with nations further down in the Balkanlar who actually have committed genocide recently.

Like in every war, all sides want to claim victim status and frame the other as the villains

I heard that they are germanised slavs, but a good ones unlike Czechs
Idk never spoke with one or went there

how are Czechs not good? they want to scam you when you come to their country, and they're a bit feisty, tho not as much as the Rus or Poles or Serbs. I don't think they're that bad overall.

>unlike Czechs
Lol why?
I remember my dad telling me, it think it was about the Russians and the Czechs, always beating the shit out of each other in ice-hokey.
Not sure if I'm confusing it with some other nations.

>he said the beer was mid compared to german
Well it's super cheap apparently!
>and some stuffs were degen (quite germanic thing, such as one highway and a sex toys museum in the middle of the capital)
Kek I've also noticed way more sex shops and local being more degenerate when I was there in 2018. I wouldn't say that's necessarily a German thing

West Slavic ppl would try anything to attract more tourists, maybe it's cause they're far from the Med. A good example is random sculptures of like fairy tale creatures or weird cartoon characters in their cities, the only reason for which is to serve as a curiosity for foreigners.

>And I especially don't appreciate the ones clinging desperately to the idea that we're not Balkan
