Aussie education

They have the best accents anyway, non rhotic accents are awful

I don't think anybody is consciously learning American English anywhere. At school it's always British English that's being taught.
People end up with an American accent because Anglo-Saxon culture is dominated by Americans and if you learn English 90% of what you'll see will just be yank stuff.

Same how someone learning Portuguese will naturally end up with a Brazilian accent, because no one gives a fuck about Portugal

I think perhaps the fact that Anglos around the world think of their own culture according to their local sensibilities, and the resentment they have over Americans, is making them forget that in the grand scheme of things English and Anglo culture is associated with the USA before anyone else and no one really thinks about other Anglo countries. To the entire world, America is the point of reference to Anglo culture, just like Mexico is for LatAm.
Most people in Europe probably know more about Americans than Englishmen because they are simply more relevant. I long thought Canada and Australia were just America but with snow and kangaroos. I'm willing to bet most people think the same too.

we were taught exclusively British English, though teachers wouldn't correct you if you spoke in an American way
my accent is a mix of mostly New England/NYC accents + a bit of SoCal with a vaguely Balto-Slavic sounding foundation if that makes sense

I used to speak in a Brit accent but I dropped it because US accents are not as defined by social class, they are more egalitarian, so speaking in a Midatlantic US accent doesn't carry as much baggage with it.

I just learned through games, music and Family Guy subs. I always play Sniper if that helps your mental state.

Aquí en los EEUU, tenemos que aprender español pero podemos tomar el francés o español también. Si tú viajes a Miami, escucharás más español y portugués que inglés. Se acabó.

T. Acabo de empezar a reaprender español.

He'd be offended actually
Australians hate tf2's sniper because his accent is fake
No one cares about heavy, medic or spy sounding like stereotypes because it's funny, but Australians are extremely insecure

Do Belgians and Suisse have different French accents or no. When I went to Québec, I could hardly understand a damn thing. They could understand me but not vise versa

So what advice would you give to someone interested in learning Italian. Is there any special media you’d recommend to foreigners?
>>
I rarely have to speak english out loud, I just read it or listen to it
>>
>>226037195
tell me you only speak one language without telling me you only speak one language
most of us just pick it up automatically through a variety of English language media
US English just happens to be overrepresented in TV, movies, music and vidya

no, quebec is on it's own league. If you've never been exposed to it, it's basically like those old scottish or irish farmers speaking english

They do have a bit of an accent yes, but most of the time all francophones in Europe sound roughly the same. The most distinct accent is found in southern France, where people speak with far more emphasis and melody, but even there most people sound standard now as regional accents slowly fade away.
Quebecers and other francophones in America sound very distinct because both our speech diverged in different directions. Quebecers speak quite differently depending on whether they are speaking formally or informally. I find that informal speech is harder to understand while formal speech is easier. I've read somewhere that formal speech was inspired by the French spoken in France because it was seen as more "proper" than the local French by the rising Francophone bourgeoisie in Canada.

All Francophones in America are a bit hard to understand. The general Frenchman doesn't know a single thing about French speakers in America but I've heard enough on YouTube videos to form my own barely informed opinion on them. Louisianans are frankly almost incomprehensible. Acadians often have a bit of an English accent. Quebecers as I said are generally easier to understand, but they speak as if they could barely open their mouths and were speaking through their teeth, it's very nasal and they put an S everywhere they can.

>that formal speech was inspired by the French spoken in France
*influenced, not inspired
