Today we celebrate Gustav Adolf, Sweden's greatest king. He found Sweden a backwater shithole losing 3 wars of annexation - He settled each war, centralized the nation and turned Sweden into a fucking empire. He was the 3rd to last European king to die in battle.
>>
Bit weird to celebrate on the day he died

When was Sweden at war again and what exactly happened?

It coincided with a great victory. I don't think his birthday was anything special.

Was a Pyrrhic victory though

The participation of Sweden in the 30 Years War was only possible due to the financing of France. And both states kept being allies throughout the 17th and 18th century.
>>
>>226050904
Swedish mercs tortured all German civilians they could get their hands on during the 30 years war. They used these learnings to later torture and sack Poles, that's why they're still mad about it 400 years later
>>
>>226050904
During the swedish/french phases of the 30 Years War (here 1630 t0 1648) swedish forces became infamous for torturing civilians by forcing excrements down their throats. This form of torture was nothing new (pic rel comes from the late middle ages) but imperial propaganda focused on the cruelty of the swedish army in order to drum up a sense of german patriotism against the foreign invaders. There is also a popular book from the late 1660s about a fictional german mercenary from said war which describes this method.

>The Schwedentrunk (German: [ˈʃveːdn̩ˌtʁʊŋk], Swedish drink) is a method of torture and execution in which the victim is forced to swallow large amounts of a foul liquid, such as excrement.

The mod is just called Thirty Year War.
https://www.twcenter.net/forums/1648-thirty-years-of-war.1965/
I think it's made by some Germans on Total War Centre, so it's originally in German, but has an English translation pack. As far as mods for that game go, it's pretty good imo.
It's not a mechanic in the game, either. At the start of some turns, there are popups/tidbits of information about the actual conflict displayed periodically. For example, it will tell you about things like the Bohemian Revolt, different factions entering the conflict, shifts in political and military structure of German states, etc. At one point, one of those tells you about the Swedish drink.

How do Finns feel about stuff like this? Since they were part of the Kingdom of Sweden for a long time. Did they fight under Gustavus Adolphus too? Do they also take any pride in it or take it as part of their national heritage too?
I find ethnicities within larger kingdoms to be interesting, like the Welsh in England or Slovaks in Hungary. In those examples, the Welsh and Slovaks contributed significantly to the larger kingdom they were in. Did Finns experience a similar thing in the Kingdom of Sweden?

Longer answer is that outside nationalist-historians everyone agrees Finland and Finns were an integral part of the Swedish kingdom, as in when discussing historical events; "We" means the Swedish kingdom as a whole. Things relating only to Finns and Finland means discussing local events. For example it is said "The King" did X thing/made a new law/founded a city etc. never "the Swedish King".
>>
It's also considered the national day of the fennoswedes in Finland. Traditionally modersmålets sång is sang today.

Hello, Spain wins again. Anyways, congrats for being brave at those times.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_N%C3%B6rdlingen_(1634)

The Battle of Nördlingen,[c] fought over two days from 5 to 6 September 1634, was a major battle of the Thirty Years' War. An Imperial–Spanish force led by the Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand and Ferdinand of Hungary inflicted a crushing defeat on the Swedish–German army led by Gustav Horn and Bernhard of Saxe-Weimar.

Nördlingen effectively destroyed Swedish power in southern Germany, and has been described by some commentators as "arguably the most important battle of the war".[6] It has been also portrayed as "a Spanish victory," with victory owing much to the performance of the veteran tercios,

We always won, in Europe, America, Africa or Asia.
>>
>>226057653
you literally lost the war. this is like the english bragging about agincourt despite losing the HYW, it's just sad cope.
>>
>>226054768
>finland was promised to us 3000 years ago eller något
>>
>>226058227
I was just talking about Nordlingen against the Swedish army.

And we did not lose the war, we did not give a fuck. It was the Habsburgs Kings in Spain using the Spanish Tercios to support their own interests in central Europe. Most Spanish soldiers were already in America at that time so we did not send all our power, probably not even the 10%.
>>
>>226058227
True. Out of all the great powers Spain got the least out of the 30 Years War. Hell, the war between France and Spain would drag on to 1659 and there was also no real gain for Spain in the Treaty of the Pyrenees.
>>226057653
I wonder, do spanish people that are interested in this time period know about the advances the Imperial-Spanish armies under Piccolomini did into France in the late 1630s? Even Paris was threatened for a time. I don't think I've ever seen any depiction of those offensives - perhaps this goes against the established pop history view that the HRE and Spain were on the backfoot for the entirety of the war?
>>
>>226060095
90% of Spaniards barely know 3 kings of the Reconquista or 3 Conquistador soldiers so...most people did not even know that Spain had wars in central Europe for some time.

Probably just a 3-4% know that Spain built the Camino Real from Italy to the Netherlands for example.

If I remember well, the Spanish soldiers could have taken or looted Paris but they refused.
>>
>>226060299
Yeah History is sadly a subject matter that gets the short end of the stick in school curriculums and is very easily politicised. Here it is not much better.
>If I remember well, the Spanish soldiers could have taken or looted Paris but they refused.
No. Supply issues and a renewed swedish offensive forced the imperial-spanish army back into Germany. The latter stages of the 30 Years War was just a game of cat and mouse where the Imperial-Spanish Army would defeat Sweden, force them back into northeastern Germany, then react to a french offensive in the west and march there to meet them, all the while Sweden rebuilt its strenght and went on another offensive to which the Imperial-Spanish army was again forced to react to.
>>
Can any of you guys recommend a book on the Thirty Years’ War, either written in English or translated to English? The only other language I know is Italian.

I've read the Diary of Peter Hagendorf; a soldier who largely fought for the imperial side. Due to him being able to read and write competently he lucked out and often landed "comfy" administrative positions - he still saw his fair share of combat. Sadly I don't think that it exists in english but there is apparently this book (The Thirty Years War: A Documentary History by Tryntje Helfferich) which contains this diary in addition to another diary and other sources and works - I would go with this one.

Playing Europa Barbarorum kind of steered me towards being a little bit of a history nerd. So when those popups appear, at least in a good mod, sooner or later I try to read most of them.
It can be cool. If I didn't, I wouldn't have known that the Thirty Years War was the most destructive conflict in European history up until World War 1. It also led to me learning about the French attempt at limiting Hapsburg power and their emergence as the dominant continental power after the conflict.

Swedish accomplishments in the 30 years' war: Single-handedly conquered half of Germany, became an empire (population: 1 million)

Spanish accomplishments in the 30 years' war: Won 1 battle, ran their empire into the ground to do so (population: 30 million, owned half the globe at that point)
