Japan is like a giant Chik Fil A. For those of you from restofworld, at Chik Fil A when you say thanks the wagie will ALWAYS say "My pleasure!" It's like someone is recording them and if they just smile or say you're welcome then the boss will take them out behind the dumpster and break a finger. Consequently, as the customer you always try to suppress the instinct to say thanks, so as not to burden the wagie and yourself with a needlessly heavy interaction.Japan is like this. If you smile at the wrong time, you're getting bowed at. If you hand the busboy your plate, you're getting arigatou gozaimasu'd. God help you if you let on that you're carrying trash. The wagie's service persona is so complete that it makes the customer's every move self-conscious. You can talk about Chinese cameras all you want, but as the interloper, I found Japanese politeness far more suffocating.
