I've seen kigs with entirely wrong hair colors for their character and they still end up looking fine. If you choose a good maker with a good track record of doing the kind of character you want you will generally be fine. That way, even if they tremendously fuck up you will be still be leagues ahead of people who pick bad makers or people who pick makers who cannot do their desired character.
