What to watch to get some sort of idea about daily domestic life in rural/suburban Japan that's
>live action
>comfy/funny leaning
>somewhat true to life
>set in the 90s/00s

Bump

not entirely what you're looking for and probably only half true to life, but I cant ever pass up recommending Beach Boys (drama) as that perfect 90s JP comfy show

i feel pretty qualified in terms of niche japanese low-to-mid budget 90s-2000s slice of life movies specifically.
i do not know about educational per-se in the traditional sense, but rather in an immersive sense. these movies i enjoy put you into a time capsule in japan.
to start off with, watch kore-eda movies.
for a realistic depiction of your average family in the 2000s, watch still walking (2008). the other ones i would recommend and have seen include our little sister (2015), nobody knows (2004), maborosi (1995), and air doll (2009) (my personal favorite of his, it's about a sex doll coming to life and coming to terms with modern society).
many of kore-eda's movies are depressing to a degree, but are laid back in atmosphere regardless, except some recent stuff like monster (2023), which i would still recommend but it isn't within that time frame and is more of a thriller.
alternatively, check out naomi kawase's suzaku (97), it's a really good film with great aesthetic presentation and atmosphere. depicts more rural life and coming to terms with loss etc... or shinji aoyama movies like eureka (2000), which is 3 hours and monochrome, but really good, or my god, my god, why hast thou forsaken me? (2005), which is more set in an alternative future where a suicide epidemic takes place - oddly mirroring the covid-19 pandemic in a way.
the taste of tea (2004) is a great, trippy family drama, maybe slightly too long but it's a real good time, and hideaki anno makes an appearance which is cool.
akihiko shiota's movies moonlight whispers (99) and harmful insect (01) are both great, but pretty dark and depressing and kind of twisted and fucked up. youth school-dramas.
nobuhiro yamashita movies like linda linda linda (05) and a gentle breeze in the village (07) are both slice of life stuff, with linda being about a high school band. a gentle breeze is small rural village life.
maybe watch pulse (2001), it's a horror movie by kiyoshi kurosawa, but it depicts lost generation disparity and internet usage in a unique way.
there's plenty more non-jp movies i could recommend that also cover a similar feeling, but that would be more off-topic. there's also a lot more japanese movies i could recommend if you want, but i think this should be enough for now.

on the funnier side i should not forget toyoda toshiaki's hanging garden, from 2005. it's both funny and dark at the same time and really beautifully shot. of all the movies i listed you should probably check still walking, hanging garden, and the taste of tea

Midnight dinner maybe? I may remember that title wrong, but that's a series about a dining place where the boss and guests exchange conversation about their lives. You can't guess the outcome of those stories

Which site you recommend to watch those with eng sub?

some of them may be on certain public trackers, though i use a private tracker that hosts asian dramas and movies specifically. i personally wouldn't recommend using streaming sites ever, so im not the person to ask about that. plus most of them probably have non-functioning or non-existent subtitles, and poor video and audio quality.

I struggled a lot back then just for watching ikiru. 7 samurais was an easier time

seconding Our Little Sister
Riverside Mukolitta has a nice glimpse of rural day to day life, plenty of fun moments, leaning a bit into absurd/bizarre
Linda Linda Linda isn't really about domestic life, but it's one of my favourites so.. watch it anyway, it's good wholesome fun
Dryads in a Snow Valley is almost a documentary with how it examines rural domestic life, so it might not be as comfy or funny as you want, but it's certainly true to life
