It would be a good idea to know what you want to do with the language. Move to Japan and get a job there? Talk to Japanese idols in person? Watch anime with subtitles? Each one of those requires different efforts and learning methods. For example, if you just want to talk to idols, you can pretty much skip the entire JLPT series and go straight into basic vocabulary + variety shows and theater MCs to understand how people that age speak with one another.
