l lived and worked in Japan for 2 years working as the only gaijin gardener at a traditional Japanese gardening company. It was very interesting and really quite amazing the opportunities I was given. I was treated like a regular Japanese worker. Got to work on UNESCO heritage sites, climb trees, and do all sorts of shit.Work was very hard though, long hours and very little time off.Japan pros were very cute girls, vtubers were in my time zone, 310 yen combini whiskeyJapan cons were working hours were aids, shops opened after I was at work and closed before I got home. 72 hours a week, 310 combini whiskey. I worked an entire year yet somehow due to the shitty conversion rate between JPY and USD, I didn't make enough for the US to even want my taxes. Talk about demoralizing. I filed everything, saved all my paperwork only for the government to say, shit nigga, you need this more than we do.That said, Japan was the safest place I've ever seen. I'd move back tomorrow if I could just work the hours promised on the contract.

Yeah I passed the N3 a year and a half ago and was very close to passing N2 but didn't make it. However I operate at that level. Took the student visa route and been living here in Tokyo since the start of July. However the student placed me in a N3 level class and so far the school is simply a 4-hour mandatory distraction that mildly challenges me, but I decided to not make a fuss out of it because my number 1 priority is getting a job and then get a better place to live, so taking it chill at school and not have it be a source of stress is appreciated at this moment. Plus terms last only 3 months and if you do well they move you up. Live in a shitty ass sharehouse and had to quit my job, so I am currently eating thru my savings, but I'm betting all my chips on getting a job pronto and turning my student visa into a working visa. I have a couple of interviews lined up and I'm pretty confident. Summer is actual hell, especially since I had only been here a couple times and both were in the winter, so experiencing Japanese summer has been challenging to say the least, but we ball on this motherfucker. I will make it in this country and so will you.

I lived there for a year with a working holiday visa as a do or die attempt to get over my hikki-neet tendencies.Had to sadly leave after a year and am now working on getting some qualifications to eventually go back if they will allow it. Got into software development but not sure how the future looks for it and since the immigration rules are so strict it's going to be tough. Imagine doing your jobs, but you are not allowed to use any English that you don't already know how to say perfectly and naturally in japanese and you're not allowed to understand any references to celebrities or sports/bible analogies/sayings/references. In America, this would probably get you blacklisted as too autistic to work in a modern American corporate setting. Also, if you don't understand japanese business language, etiquette, and communication, you're at a severe disadvantage because you'd be competing with mid career hires that have had that shinsotsu education. So you have to study N1, native tier speaking and intonation, and Japanese business culture (something a new grad hire in Japan would learn at the company that hires them). You see the shinsotsu walking around all the time around February/march timeframe being taught how to be a proper shakaijin, and you would be having to self study that by buying books in japanese for japanese on the rules of business etiquette and speach. It's not insurmountable, but the things that matter to japanese companies that japanese people learn as a part of growing up and entering society would become your responsibility to learn on your own. If you graduated at the age of 21 to 22 with an N1 and a bachelor's in computer science or software engineering, the shinsotsu path would be far more feasible. The much easier path that I recommend would be to find a job that pays in dollars that allows remote work (should be easy to find for software) and marry a japanese woman and live with her in Japan. A mid career upper middle class japanese is making about 6 to 8 million yen per year in software. Are you ok with making $40k to $55k in the absolute best case scenario where 4-5 hours of sleep per night got you perfect japanese and a degree in a couple years? I think you would be better off marrying a japanese woman, and being a foreigner she would not label you autistic for not having N1 japanese, and you get to live in Japan on a spousal visa (a 3 year path to permanent residence), and you get paid in dollars or euros which japanese women love because it's an automatic 1.6 multiplier. AND the average salary is a higher number. If you end up pulling a 6 figure salary doing remote work, that translates to unironically being upper class in Japan. This is basically the best plan to live in Japan without the downsides of being paid in a dying currency and dealing with bullshit circus show japanese business culture where you're a dancing monkey surrounded by clowns. You can also pass the English language and western citizenship to your child, should you choose to have one, which is cheat skill levels of unfair advantage to a japanese child. You would be a catch. Just download bumble and introduce yourself in japanese as 〇〇出身 and 仕事は〇〇 and have your profile pic as either you in a suit or on an expensive vacation (preferably outside Japan). There are tons of lonely japanese woman and a 32 year old western man who can have a conversation with them more substantive than ordering beer is a superpower.Think a little outside the box and adjust to your needs.

I know far too many people who moved to Japan for idols, and none of them had a stable, high-performing life in their home countries. Everyone “failed to launch” at home with no college education or a career, so they moved to Japan. One of them is a concafe girl who hates men but who makes a pretty good living doing papakatsu and getting those concafe commissions.
