If you're getting rid of the physicals afterwards and want the scans to look better, you could cut the spine and properly scan the flat pages. This would also let you scan them significantly faster, as many larger scanners often have a sheet fed system where you can give it a stack and it'll scan each page on its own. I normally recommend people to go to a local library to borrow their, usually, much larger, scanners, but bringing in your sort of media might not be wise...

>>51189882The best option for digitizing books without damaging them is going to be to use a book scanner. They make far nicer ones, but something like picrel will probably get you good results. These still cost a couple hundreds dollars if I recall, so the easiest and least expensive way is set up your own stand like this with a camera/phone and tripod. You won't have the software that corrects the bends along the spine, but you'll have somewhat clean images of the book this way. If the doujinshi are saddle stitched (stapled) on the spine, you should have an easy enough time getting them to lie flat. The perfect bound ones (glued spine) will likely not work well for this method.As a side note, I've been trying to convince my boss to invest in a proper book scanner (totally for the good of the business and not so that I can use it too) but the nice commercial models cost thousands of dollars

To top it off, even native Japanese don't fully understand Japanese and don't know all their Kanji (in writing). It is a system that borrows from Chinese (a nation they hate) yet is different. Japanese as a language is so different from other languages that almost nothing transfers over. With latin originating languages they can kind of guess what each other is saying without being fluent in italian, spanish, english or whatever.I'd like to converse with the mangakas but I have to become semi-fluent just to speak to them at a con. Meanwhile most of the world has a dual language system where they all know some univeral english. In high school Americans are at least taught Spanish and/or French. In Japan you either know full Japanese as a visitor or you can't talk to anyone.
