EP 8 is all about moving on and finding happiness, although it would be strange and somewhat irresponsible to make a change of plans this late in the project. It is rather peculiar that its message would be the type of thing that would resonate with Ryukishi at the time.

manga differs with the novel ehh, kanon was simply created to cope with loneliness since battler wouldn't visit the island. the truth to the surgery was revealed very later, just one year before battler returned. so I don't think any "kanon created because gender something something" holds up.
