I've seen this thing in pic related in different media. What is it? And how do the sleeves stay up?And what is the context of those robes compared to the regular white robe long red skirt that miko use?
>>51178663They used to be worn by aristocrats in the Heian period and they act as something of an overcoat to the kimono beneath. Fashion eventually moved on but this still stuck around as a bit of ceremonial attire (along with a hat, though the character there isn't wearing it) so it's still worn by Shinto clergy for ceremonies and such. As for the sleeves, apparently they tend to be connected to the back as seen here.
>>51178859Thank you anon, really informative and the image is even more so

It's called "kariginu" and it's commonly worn by shinto priests. Like >>51178859 said, it used to be worn by aristocrats in the past. Futo Mononobe is wearing one, for example.
