I wish people understood. Chinese characters were developed for the Chinese language. When applied to Japanese, they do not follow the same logic. In Chinese, a character generally has one reading and one meaning. In Japanese, this is not the case. A character can be used in many different words, doesn't really have any particular meaning, and may have 12 (or more!) different readings depending on the word it appears in. Just. Learn. Vocab.
