just finished this movie.
overall i'd say it's one of those clearly higher-budget "safe" sanitized asian drama-flicks, with objectively good technical elements like shot composition, character, set and prop design.
the main idea of it is that the protagonist, shiino, had a friend, mariko, who commits suicide at the beginning of the movie, and the rest of the movie is shiino coming to terms with this in her own way, usually conveyed through flashbacks to various moments in their lives. what i find annoying is how most of the "dramatic" moments in the movie are just shiino lashing out at people and yelling very loudly. she even threatens her dead friend's parents at knife-point in order to steal her ashes from them, and faces zero repercussions by the end of the film.
what's funny is that in my experience usually the person who is a victim of abuse and mistreatment by other people is more prone to lashing out, but she always maintained a meek and angelic persona. it's just the way this movie wanted to portray its themes i guess, but i personally dont find such protagonists appealing.
the other unrealistic element is this homeless guy she meets toward the end of the movie, who is the most relaxed individual on the planet, and helps her repeatedly without expecting anything in return. very idealistic portrayal for a seemingly random streanger she meets on the side of the road.
finally, the main redeeming quality of this movie for me is the climax of the movie, which i thought was genuinely clever and well done/emotionally affecting. and despite all it's negative qualities ill probably still end up thinking about it for quite a while.
