>>51212398>Next Meetup: TBDNo Dolpa meetup?
>>51213041Probably, my apologies. Anyone have details on a Dollpa meetup? Was running on 3hrs of sleep..
Some people mentioned coming down to the LA area, but I don't think anyone has organized anything yet. A few of us are local
>>51213202>>51213041>>51214482I don't plan to go, but to any anons who plan to go, good luck and have fun!Take lots of pictures!
Hewwo, anyone good with photography here? What are your opinions on the ricoh gr cameras? I like how they are small and compact, but I'm not too sure if I can use them for BJD/mma/warhammer photography.
>>51214615Myself and another anon both independently bought Pentax K1s for the purpose of doll photos because they're really good (for that price point) for taking exceptionally sharp photos of things that are guaranteed not to move. I'm not sure about more modern Ricoh/Pentax offerings are like but I can say their older cameras definitely do the job (and I personally like the benefit of anything with a K-mount being able to use vintage glass for the cost of a chicken mcnugget.) Hopefully another anon can weigh in there. (If not, /p/ might be better for this question.)More than that, if you're just starting out with photography, whatever you get will be fine, whether it's a new camera, an old camera, your phone, or a gameboy camera. What matters most there is learning to use the tools at your disposal to determine not just how to take good shots, but what a good photo means to you in the first place. Once you're comfortable with that, you can specialize from there. (If you already know what you're doing, disregard; you know this already.)
>>51214615We only preggo fetish photography here
>>51214615Any dedicated camera is already an improvement over a phone camera. If you like Ricoh cameras then go for it. But those don't seem like interchangeable lens cameras? I don't know too much about those cameras. What is important are tripods and the time to get accustomed to your gear and taking lots of photos to improve your skills.Once you have some more experience, then you will have a better idea of what camera you will want to get.Any camera within the last 5-10 years with interchangeable lens will be more then sufficient for doll/hobby photo needs. I'm sure the Ricoh would work fine, but if the lens are fixed then it may limit your options in the future.
>>51214615You can take pictures with any kind of camera you have the budget for. I don't know about that model in particular, but point and shoot cameras have a fixed focal length, so you'll have to physically get closer or further away depending on the shot you want, and it may lack some of the finer details and tweaks you can make with a DSLR. But if you're just starting out and don't know what to do, they'll do just fine. Check the specs on the exact model of camera you're looking at though, and compare them to your smartphone if you have one. A lot of modern Smartphones have about the same if not better quality than a lot of point and shoot cameras on the market. I took pictures with just my smartphone for years and years, and you can get really good photos out of them. Pic related, taken on a Samsung S10 years ago.
>>51214615>BJD/mma/warhammerone of these is not like the other lol. BJD and warhammer are mostly stationary, so a slower camera is fine. but mma (mixed martial arts?) needs a fast camera with maybe some decent wide aperture lenses to capture the action properly. I'm not familiar enough with ricoh gr to know how well it'd suit mma
>>51214615>BJD/mma/warhammer photography.Well, on the BJD/side, they're all 28mm equivalents, which means they're probably wider than you'd want most of the time. They're also, you know, expensive, especially for a fixed lens camera. I can't find specs on the close focus distance, but I wager macro ability is not great so it's probably not ideal for Warhammer minis(but fine for wide shots of tables and such). It's definitely not good for MMA. You're going to want something with a long, fast lens(something like a 70-200mm f/2.8 would be ideal, but expensive, or a fast prime like a 135mm f/2.8), and you probably just aren't going to get that in an all in one package. Unless you're literally ringside, I guess, then you could probably get away with a 85mm f/2.8, or maybe a 50mm f/1.8? It really depends on where you are relative to the action, but I assume you're going to be a good 10-20 feet away. You also probably want something with good low light autofocus and strong performance at high ISO.You can get a Canon Rebel with kit lens for less than a Ricoh, and use the remainder to pick up a fast longer zoom or prime. You're probably also going to want a tripod for all of those hobbies, especially the Warhammer and MMA - macro is hell without stability, and and tripod can be used to limit the movement of the camera to a single direction for cool panning shots. If you're willing to get into it, any camera with a interchangeable lens system will do you well, especially since you cna always expand your lens lineup to expand your capability, unlike a fixed lens camera that's always going to be limited to whatever lens you're stuck with.
something to consider, the people here are heavily biased towards DSLR and vintage lenses which do usually benefit more from tripods due to DSLR and older stuff generally lacking in-body/lens stabilization. IBIS is basically standard on mirrorless cameras and that plus lens stabilization means that you can get shots without the tripod as long as you aren't some coked up drughead with shaky hands. so that's why I generally tell newbies to go for a mirrorless if you can afford it. even entry level mirrorless cameras aren't that much more expensive these days
so for photography a 90mm lens will be great for portraits of your dolls since it compresses the image nicely unlike 28/50mmadditionally, mirror less is fine, all the brands are good as long as it has phase detect af
>>51215109also ama, I used to do macro and portrait photohraphy
Damn, that's a lot of helpful information anons.>>51214646Nice thanks anon. I've been checking out the spec sheet but a lot goes over my head. My friend showed pictures of the 40mm and 28mm, but I only thing I realized that different lens length is useful depends on the subject matter and how the picture is composed.>>51214653>But those don't seem like interchangeable lens cameras?Afraid not, they're set in stone from what I understand. But part of the appeal is that it doesn't require me to lug half a train's worth of gear. Thanks for the heads up.>>51214658Thanks anon. I'm not too sure what a good starting budget is. These cameras do seem rather pricey so I was thinking about even trying with a basic one I get from fb marketplace and see if I enjoy it or not. I'm eying the new ricoh gr ivx (40mm) since my friend said it was compact and good for daily stuff. I have a pixel 9 phone. >>51214728yeah mma, I just enjoy some movements they do, or anything that involves a degree of movement, wanted to take the 'in the moment' pictures since it's neat. >>51215078Looks like I need to read up on basic photography terminology. So if I did just wanted to start with BJD and Warhamms, why do you suggest the wide lens of 28mm? I thought something tighter like a 40mm would lead to more portrait or details of the doll? Just a cameralet here so I'm happy to be corrected.
>>51215128anon didn't say 28mm was good for BJD or warhammer, only that it was maybe good for "wide shots of the table". as in, your overall formation and not close ups. wide angle focal lengths (roughly anything lower than 35mm) are generally considered landscape-oriented as they emphasize scale/scope of the environment over individual details.50mm is considered the middle ground because it most closely mimics the human field of view. it generally has the lowest amount of distortion and lots of photographers have use a "nifty-fifty", meaning a high quality 50mm with wide aperture (f/1.8 or lower)above 50mm begins to compress the image and 85mm is considered the standard portraiture length for nice looking pictures focused on people (and probably dolls). past 85mm gets into telephoto range that's usually for long distance wildlife, although you can sometimes use it at closer positions for some bokeh tricks
>>51215128mma will have the same needs as general sports photography: long focal length (telephoto) since you aren't close to the competitors, fast autofocus (so you can capture moments clearly instead of missing with blurry pictures), and wide aperture for the lens to accommodate probably having poor lighting (and/or good high ISO performance in the lens/camera body). the ricoh gr and most small compact cameras are NOT going to be good for mma or sports photography
looking into the ricoh gr stuff, it seems like a nice camera specifically for general street photography. slightly wide-ish 40mm focal length, decent f/2.8 aperture, and small handheld size for impromptu pictures of daily life. you could probably take some good BJD photos with it I think
>>51215153theyre so expensive for what they provide. much rather go for a milc Fuji camera
>>51215157yeah, probably. but the dude really doesn't want interchangeable lenses afaik. honestly, I'd recommend the new lumix L10 maybe since it's in the same price range, but has a 24-75mm f/1.7-2.8 zoom lens. out of stock everywhere tho as a new release
>>51215176keep in mind the f stops aren't the same as a ff camera so they're different dof
>>51214646>Myself and another anon both independently bought Pentax K1sI have been summonedto be fair the K-1 isn't really bad, most of that is /p/ memes which I will happily lean into because it's funny>>51215107ironically the K-1 is one of the DSLRs with IBIS, specifically so Pentax can support all their old lenses (and totally not because they don't have the R&D money)that said, it's important to clarify that in-body/optical stabilization works by allowing you to decrease your shutter speed for a better exposurethis means it mainly helps when you're taking a handheld photo of something stillit does not help when your subject is moving and you want a faster shutter speed to freeze itdolls are the former, MMA is the latter>>51215109strong disagreeI stick to 50mm for most everything these days50mm/equivalent is considered "standard" because how far away the photo was taken roughly matches typical viewing distances for photos, so the result looks "natural"or at least matches the vibe everyone's settled on over a century and a half of photographyonly move away from 50/equiv when it can't do what you wantthat's either the look (longer if you're going for that compressed portrait look, shorter for intentional distortion) or because you can't reasonably move to reframe (longer for sports & wildlife, shorter for architecture & landscape)>>51214615>>51215128I will second "any interchangeable lens camera from the last 5-10 years", actually I'd say 10-15 yearsthe thing about your first ILC is you almost certainly will upgrade within 1-2 years once you learn, so don't worry too much about buying into a specific brand or lens systemjust get an old (working) APS-C DSLR with a 18-55 kit zoom, then a cheap amazon tripod, and work from there
thanks again for all the responses anons, hope I didnt derail your thread. I thought I'll ask since I've seen some nice photos from your guys so you might have a clue or two about this stuff.>>51215157>>51215176I'm happy to consider other options, but thanks for the recommendations. I'll look into it.>>51215138ah, looks like I need to read things more carefully. thanks anon>>51215146noted>>51215226sounds good, i'll do that instead.
>>51215239That last point from this anon >>51215226 is key, I feel like. Just get any interchangeable lens camera in your budget that comes with an 18-55mm zoom lens (or something similar) and an tripod and you're good to start out. Unfortunately MMA vs toy photography are diametrically opposed subjects (fast action versus literal inanimate objects,) so starting with a solid "all-around decent" option and then determining where you're struggling will be more beneficial than specializing out of the gate. (And no worries about derailing the thread, this is all topical as far as I'm concerned. Doll photography is one part of the hobby, after all.) >>51215226Morning Pentax dollanon, aren't you also the anon with the gameboy camera?
>>51214658Samus, my love!
>>51214615Toyo 45GX and just send it
>>51215519I would worry about my doll becoming fish food with that doll stand…
>>51215519Based, I wish I had a large format camera
My first real camera I could use constantly was a DSi and I took some great shots with it and used it so much the shoulder buttons literally stopped working. (This was before I had dolls, of course.) Therefore use whatever you have and go from there and you will surely improve with time.
The third arm first iteration seems to be good. I cut a shoulder section in half, it matches the lower hips really close. I can probably grind it a little more flush, the opening on the hip can probably be smaller then. Abomination-chan is the only base body i had laying around, she's not getting more arms.

>>51219269Small doll in a big world
>>51219264>>51219269>>51219271Cute and beautiful pics out there and really nice weather too!
Some more pictures of my Corvus Corax body. Overall really well made doll, great range of motion. My only issue are the welded boobs and how flat the butt looks compared to the thighs.
>>51208075>damn those legs can go all the way up like that without a visible extra thigh/hip joint? how do they work?NTA but the vinyl shell is very soft so it can deform quite a bit and it sits very loose on the frame so you can twist it to hide gaps from the angle you're taking pictures from like in this pic.>>51211998>How about balance without a stand? It's okay-ish with the flat feet on.
