ZUN uses Reimu when he needs a serious protagonist; Marisa when he needs a goofy protagonist; the oji-sans when he needs exposition; Mamizou when he needs an archetypal trickster; Aya when he needs a character who needs little motive to investigate something; and Miyoi when he needs a character to be talked at for a monologue. The rest of the characters only show up when they're involved in the monthly episode.
