They kept looking at her and addressing her instead of me. I just wanted to walk away from the interaction.I’ve lived in Japan long enough that I’m used to the occasional “Japanese person accompanying the foreigner must be the one we should talk to” interaction, but for some reason the combination of the two things really irritated me that day.Maybe I was already annoyed because of the drink incident, and maybe neither staff member meant anything by it. I'm wondering if it's worth learning Japanese if you don't like anime (maybe aside from a few cool titles). I'm also surprised that Jdramas aren't as popular or produced in such large numbers or exported as much as Kdramas. For example, there’s a lot of great source material for cool series based on Japanese light novels (let’s ignore isekai and the like), but they turn them into generic anime with uninteresting, static animation.On the other hand, I think India is making the opposite mistake, because many of its productions would gain international popularity if they were action-packed shounen-style animations. Naruto or, idk, JJK, could easily be a Bollywood series but with less success abroad

So, I'm kind of newer to learning Japanese, but I've noticed one thing about the way it is taught that is really frustrating. When you learn a new word, you are often just given one or two English synonyms for the word to begin with, but if often isn't the TRUE meaning of the word.For example, I was initially taught かける means "to hang" and that made sense in the example sentences given to me. But then I started to see it in other contexts that didn't make as much sense ("hang your voice?" "hang a sauce?"). Then I eventually learned the true meaning of かける is something more like "to suspend or bridge one thing over another" and then those things started making sense.So I guess what I'm getting at is, are there any resources or dictionaries that define Japanese words in that way? Things like Jisho.org aren't helpful because it is basically just a list of words and doesn't give an actual definition.
