Does anyone else feel like it's really obvious that japan peaked super hard in the 80's/90's/2000's and it will never be that good again?Like otaku stuff is not my main thing anymore, but every now and then I relisten to Ride on Time or read YU-NO and I'm like holy shit! There was something truly magical in the air in Japan at that time. But it's kinda sad because Japan will never be that awesome again

I don't know, but it is definitely harder to find good original anime these days that arent based on an existing ip, manga, or light novel.I still find plenty of really interesting modern manga though, it just doesnt get popular. In a way I'd say it's facing the same problem video games are. The old stuff is competing with the new stuff for your time, and we've reached the point if saturation where being good doesn't necessarily mean you will become popular.
>>51329829Otaku culture peaked in the 2000s and it is what it is. It was perfect and there will never be anything like it ever again.
>>51329829I went to see Ninja Scroll the other day at the movie theater. It had been so long I had forgotten most of the plot points. Great movie though.
I recently found this songhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHxvQ1wKCuAAnd I was like holy shit! That part at 1:18 where it uses the same chord progression from Pink Floyd's Time, but it's completely redone in a City Pop style with that incredible bass line and the call-and-response, and the super catchy chorus, and the gorgeous synths pads that just weave in effortlessly into the mix. And the sax solo at 3:00. This is incredible
>>51329829That's just civilization in general, not just Japan. The future is poverty and barbarism. But yes, you are basically right.
>>51329829The entire world peaked hard in the 70s/80s/90s. You can't tell me with a straight face modern western "culture" is anything else but unfathomable garbage, utterly devoid of any genuine human virtue. Were civilisational collapse to happen now and all our cultural output of the past 20 years wiped out without a trace, absolutely nothing of any value whatsoever would be lost. This is in no way anything unique to Japan.
>>51329829YeahYou can still find 80s/90s Japan in some areas of the country, either clinging to life, agonizing, or plain dead.

>>51330557>utterly devoid of any genuine human virtueIt's not just art. The people now are less virtuous. You know those clips you see on social media of people recording something crazy happening in public? I thought, "Oh that's just like a rare event. Everyone has a phone now so everything gets recorded". But then I'm walking outside yesterday and I hear a grown man yell at a child no older than 6 to "Stop crying you little faggot". I have no idea what's up with people right now.
>>51331895Although I somewhat agree with your statement I will point out that grown people yelling at children is by no means a new thing.
>>51331900I never saw it until now really. Not like full volume shouting
>>51331895>The people now are less virtuousI really don't feel that's the case. People have been dicks even back then, the only thing that changed is how visible it is
>>51331913Oh I don't doubt you. Just saying that it is not new. "It's just a prank bro" would be more relevant. Not that that is a new thing either, just the scale and monetization of it.
>>51331895I don't mean "virtue" in the sense of morally good but rather the basic characteristics of human transcendence within nature. I was never under the impression of man as a higher being. We are fancy animals, governed by the same laws of nature. But that fancy intellect allowed us to get creative enough to create spectacular displays to delude ourselves into believing in a higher purpose for ourselves - wondrous, uplifting works of art, extensive introspect of ourselves and our social structures through centuries of philosophical and anthropological tradition, a sense of beauty, aesthetics, and social values that go beyond basic pragmatic purpose, a desire to create a legacy for oneself that goes beyond the basic innate biological programming of reproduction. We were animals, but animals that were capable of creating meaning and beauty within our existence. All of these aspects of humanity seem to have been completely wiped out within the past century. The death of all art in the meat grinder of commodified, disposable fast-fashion tier entertainment culture being just one of the many symptoms.
>>51332034Yeah calling it a "regression to human nature" is pretty accurate.Growing up during Y2K, I always felt that we looked on human nature as something to grow out of, to transcend, hence all the computers and fancy tech and stuff. Hence augmented humans in Deus Ex, Ghost in the Shell etc. Now it feels like that dream is dead, and we're eating dirt for our parents and grandparents being so naive about this stuff. They got to dream while we foot the bill. They got to believe that the fundamental questions of civilization, meaning, happiness, genetics, demographics, race, gender, politics, IQ etc. were all solved, while we have to face the brutal truth that none of this is solved, while also footing the bill.
