could you make a sword work as a pickaxe somehow?

not for very long.

Since its a manga presumably they'll just animu their way through it

Obviously it wouldn't do shit in real life and any sort of digging would lead to blunting and breaking of a blade.
>>
No. Doesn't have the weight or sturdiness to do more than chip the stone a couple of time and then break, blunt, deform or all of those

a sword is going to be too thin/flexible for that kind of thing: if you try hitting a rock with one, then it'll just fuck up your sword

You can kinda mordhau it but it's still not as sturdy as a real pickaxe.

Best you could hope to do it try and make improvised chisels and wedges out of of the blade itself. Trying to use the sword as-is just won't do.

If that's a weak stone sure, won't last long but at least you have a chance to do something, if you got something like granite then you're shit out of luck

The real life answer is to disobey (((orders))) when given an impossible task and cheat by stealing real equipment or bribing workers to do the job, something like that. The animu answer is [[[work hard!]]].
