>Battle of the Cilician Gates
>The Parthians formed up loosely at the base of the hill outside their camp, with horse archers in front and cataphracts behind. Overconfident, they charged uphill without waiting for Labienus' infantry. They opened with volleys of arrows, but the Romans held firm behind their shields and replied with javelins. Ventidius then tightened his ranks and led a downhill charge. In close combat, the lightly armoured Parthian horse-archers were no match for the heavy Roman legionaries. The Parthian general was killed in the fighting.
>Battle of Amanus Pass
>Ventidius sent cavalry under Pompaedius Silo to scout and contest the pass, where Pharnapates' Parthians were defending. Silo's men were nearly overwhelmed, but Ventidius arrived quickly with the main force and launched a surprise attack. The narrow pass cramped the Parthians' movement, letting the Romans close in and crush them in melee. Pharnapates was killed.
>Battle of Mount Gindarus
When the Parthians reached the town on its small hill, they found Ventidius' legions already formed up confidently on the slopes. The Parthians rushed forward Ventidius used the high ground to send his men charging into the advancing horse-archers, forcing them into close-quarters fighting they couldn't handle. The Parthian line broke, panic spread, and many were driven downhill in chaos, trampling their own. The heavy cataphracts at the bottom were surrounded. Instead of a direct assault, Ventidius had his slingers pelt them with projectiles. Pacorus himself was slain.

>Battle of Nisibis
>The Parthians attacked at sunrise, shooting volleys of arrows, while the cataphracts, supported by lancers on dromedaries, charged the Roman front. The light infantry covering it suffered casualties, but as the Parthians drew near they withdrew, leaving large numbers of caltrops behind them, with deadly results. The Parthians' horses and camels stepped on them and fell, taking their riders with them and breaking the momentum of the advance. In the resulting close-quarter fighting, the Romans had the advantage

Could the Roman Empire at the height of its power beaten the Mongols?

yes, Roman cities were very well fortified and held massive armies and with their fortifications they'd be able to wall mongol raids off from their deep territories. you'd expect medieval-like manor transformation into fortresses even if they didn't know about motte and bailey castles.

more than anything, mongols would struggle to win over prosperous and developed Roman provinces as their auxillaries which they relied on for protracted warfare and sieges, while Romans themselves could very well approach and hire mongols to fight other mongols using their wealth and prestige, unless the mongols are really really disciplined and have an orderly and rigid chain of command.

It would have gone down just about like the war with hannibal did.
Romans just turtle in their cities while allied Socii hammer the mongolian supply lines and prevent foraging while roman expedition's send legions into enemy territory to destroy the enemies economy. Romans were like a modern western military dropped into the late bronze and iron age

Not sure how antique fortifications are supposed to help against Mongol cannons

yeah that lack of hearts and minds really hindered them in Central Asia lol
I'm a Romanboo but Rome would have gotten annihilated. Walls in Antiquity were inferior to medieval walls and were not a problem for the Mongols. Mongols also have higher population, faster, better metallurgy... and fucking gunpowder.
False retreat trick to destroy the armies; cities either got sieged or stormed.

The Romans struggled enough against the Huns, there's no way they would have held up against the Mongols.

no
