Are there any hikers or people that spend time out in bear country on here? What gun would you recommend for bear defense? Or would you not recommend one at all? Is bear spray better?
>>65195836Depends where you are. Alaska? Ruger Hawkeye African in 416 RugerLower 48? use whatever.
>>65195854Mainly black bear country, but I do want to go out west sometime.
>>65195836>Is bear spray better? The fact you even asked that tells me you're noguns. 10mm (full load) for semi.357 minimum for wheelgatUnless you want to carry a 12ga or levergatHardcast loads
>>65195858I use guns, not as much as I want to, but I don't carry one. Better question, do you go outside?
>>65195856black bears you can scare off. Brown bears are more likely to see you as food. A .357 will be just fine for a brown bear as long as you're using hard cast ammo.
>>65195877I'm pretty sure it's the other way around. I want to say there are more cases of black bears preying on people than brown bears.
>>65195836.458 Win Mag loaded with tungsten solids at the very minimum.
>>65195836Bear spray is for people, therefore guns are for bears and guns are for people. Guns.
>>65195900>458 Win Mag loaded with tungsten solids at the very minimum.Someday you will take the 9.3x62 pill and stop over compensating.
>>65195900Nah bro, you need at least an M2 Browning. Anything less and the bear will just take the gun from you and shove it up your ass.
>>65195912 RPG-7, something like a bazooka
None of the people recommending carrying a rifle have ever gone hiking.
>there has never been a single recorded instance of a 9mm handgun failing to stop a brown or black bear attack>there are two instances of 22LR firearms failing to stop polar bear attacks>there are several recorded instances of 22s killing brown bears including one in which a brown bear caught in a live trap was killed by a man armed with a 22LR single action pistol. (in this incident there was another guy armed with a shotgun but his pussy went dry at the sight of the bear so he ran back to camp for Vagisil)>countless hides of brown bears have been taken by spear hunters and bow hunters>there are many instances of bear spray failing to stop polar, brown, and black bear attacks, source: ammo lad dot comrecent attack were bear spray failed: https://abcnews.com/US/2-soldiers-alaska-injured-bear-attack-training-mission/story?id=132174677You don't need anything special for brown or black bears; they are not bullet proof. Bear spray is a waste of money.
10mm w/ bear load ammo, I carry bear spray too.
>>65195836Get a 10mm full load semi-auto and a massive can of Bear Mace. Use the Bear Mace first since its effect is instantaneous and almost 100% effective.
>>65195858the fact that you post with a tripcode tells me you're a gigantic raging faggot
>>65195836The winners circle for bear defense loads(ignoring true magnums) are the 147gr +p hardcast, 10mm 220gr hardcast, and 255gr +p hardcast. In 9mm, 10mm, and .45 respectively. All penetrate 60" plus of gelatin and are superior to any other loads in any other typical carry calibers. The 10mm options tend to have issues feeding reliably, they work fine in some guns but not others so be sure to shoot at least a few hundred rounds to vet a gun. Honestly outside of your larger brown bears a reliable FMJ load in 9mm or better will likely be fine based on a large amount of anecdotal evidence. Personally I'd stick with one of the above loads though as getting eaten alive sounds lame. Also I've seen exactly 1 necropsy of an attacking bear shot with one of the above loads, which was a larger brown bear. They penetrated the chest cavity and stopped in the other chest side wall. If that's all 60+" of jello penetration is getting me on a bear then I'll stick with it as a personal minimum.
>>65195971>fucky-wucky during an infantry training exerciseHonestly I wouldn't count that as confirmed unless and until more details come out; infantry are notoriously retarded around wildlife and pepper spray for bears =/= pepper spray for bears. I've pepper sprayed a black bear before and the effect was instant and uncanny.t. carry both
>>65196140*pepper spray for bears =/= pepper spray for humans
>>65195836>What gun would you recommend for bear defense? If you're looking to arm the bears in your region, long guns are preferable to handguns. AR kits are cheap. There's already a ton of literature out there for you to implement basic squad tactics, though I haven't checked the ar/k/ive in years.
>>65196151
>>65195836Shotgun with slugs. But in all seriousness, your odds of being killed by lightning are MUCH greater than a bear. People who get killed by bears are city slickers who want to get close to one while it has cubs, is feeding, etc. to take pictures. Just stay the fuck away from from a griz. Black bears are no real danger, I've shooed plenty of them away over the years.
>>65195836>What gun would you recommend for bear defense?Whichever handgun you are most accurate with. A 9mm that hits the bear is more effective than a .454 Casull that missed (Note: this advice was made in mind for people who are attacked by black bears or grizzlies, not polar bears). Keep in mind that not all ammo is the same, if I'm forced to use a handgun, I'd rather trust a hardcast to a JHP for bear defense. https://www.ammoland.com/2022/04/update-of-pistol-defenses-against-bears-123-cases-98-effective/>Or would you not recommend one at all?The chance you'll need one is really rare. Most bears will run if you stand your ground.>Is bear spray better? If a curious bear approaches you, yes. If a famished bear approaches you, probably not. Still, it's good to have options, and bear spray works on thugs too (pepper spray meant for humans might not be strong enough for a bear though).>>65195877>>65195892>black bears you can scare off. Brown bears are more likely to see you as food. They are equally as likely to attack you. The weaker black bears are just more common, so the attacks are more likely. The only bears to actively hunt humans are polar bears.>>65195971>there has never been a single recorded instance of a 9mm handgun failing to stop a brown or black bear attackThere is a recorded instance of a .38 failing (similar in power to a 9mm) and a .357 Magnum failing (more powerful than a 9mm). https://www.ammoland.com/2022/04/lessons-from-handgun-defense-failures-against-bears/#axzz7PY2l4PqD>>65196151TheYankeeMarshal made this joke when his channel was new. You have the same sense of humor as a liberal obsessed with midget tranny porn. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGHKkAvBWUE
>>65196294EDIT:>The chance you'll need one is really rare. Most bears will run if you stand your ground.I was supposed to finish this with the fact that it's still better to not need it and have it than to need it but not have it.
>>65195836As someone who lives in brown bear country, bear spray is better. Because it's nonlethal you can give a bear a spray immediately rather than hesitating because you don't want to kill a bear unnecessarily.
>>65195836Smith and Wesson 340pd w/ .357 magnum for black bears (and if you want a more general purpose conceal carry.)Smith and Wesson 329pd in .44 magnum for larger bears and bears more specifically.
>>65195836it'll come down to what you can reliably control. i'd rather take my chances mag dumping 9mm if i can hit tight groups than take a wrist-wrecker9000 that i'm going to fail to handle the recoil on. 10mm, 357mag, 44mag, 454 casull, 460mag, are some common cartridges that are proven for bear defense, but if you can't control 44mag you need to pick something lighter or train up to what you want to carry.>bear sprayit works, ideally you carry spray AND a gun, but you can carry just spray as long as you have a plan to gtfo after spraying it
>>65196294youtube is gaydo the math
>>65196475>Smith and Wesson 329pdprobly a good choice desu since you're most likely not gonna be using it.
Which .500 Magnum should I carry?
>>65196511Forgot image
>>65196511>>65196513.500 Magnum is old news. The new king of wrist-breaking revolvers is the .500 BushWhacker.
>>65196616What the fuck
>>65196640Open your mind to something this ridiculously excessive.
>>65195836It’s not a bad idea to have bear spray, but I do not see it as a substitute for a gun by any means. If I only had room on me or in my gear for one, the gun would win every time. This gun, in particular. Hardcast lead or monolithic copper projectiles, either .45 ACP +p, .45 Super, or .450 SMC. Look up Tim Sundles (Buffalo Bore founder), he has some videos in which he explains why .45 caliber is perhaps slightly better than 10mm for animal defense.
>>65195836Glock 20 with hard cast lead. I carry underwood black cherry.
>>65196417Unless the “bear country” in question is something like “a sidewalk in downtown Kalispell” it is perfectly legal and reasonable to try and scare a bear off by firing a gun into the ground if you believe it to be threatening you albeit non-imminently. I am eternally befuddled by the brilliant sprayfag logic of >my spicy can is better than a scary gun because if I feel a leetle bit threatened by a bear way over yonder I can just fog its general direction with a massive cloud of capsacin and pray to god that said direction is downwind of me so I’m not instantly blinded with no further ability to assess the threat, leave easily, or defend myself!
>>65196294The 357 guy outright missed all his shots, he could have brought an x-frame loaded with hardcasts and it wouldn’t have mattered.
>>65195836HK SP5
>>65196417>>65196695i literally could not care less about "wildlife" or whether it's "really necessary" to kill it in self defensestay the fuck away from me, i'm a human. i'm literally a bald pale bipedal alien, you should be scared of mewolves, foxes, deer, and all rodents are smart enough to un-ass the area I'm in prontoif you're a bear, get the fuck out of my zone and if you come any closer you'll be getting a friendly boop on the heckin' snoot by five 700 grain lead lumps traveling at approximately 2800 fpsall moose deserve to have their brains vaporized and used to paint the foliage for being aggressive dumbfucks as wellsame with big cats>b-but she might have cubs/kittens/whatever the fuck they're called nearby and she's just defending themdon't care, fuck you, eat shit, not taking the chance
